  • Lt1 Differences

so my dad was driving my car home on the free way, said the oil pressure dropped the car started smoking and he pulled over. And it would not restart, so my step mom and I had to get his F250 and car hauler and tow it home, luckily it was only about 15 min away. I get the car into the garage and the oil is nasty and black and smelled burnt, a little later i try to start the car and it starts right up, idles okay but when you touch the throttle the slightest it starts to knock, my dad and i decided that if we are to put a motor into it again it will be an lt1
my question really is what is the difference between a caprice's lt1 and a camaros, other the the aluminum?

    they seem cheeper

    also i think i need a 96, 97 lt1 and trans didnt they switch to the 4l60e in 1996?

Not a bad Idea to check vin number on engine, good way to verify if its the year seller claims. The vin is on the drivers side rear of engine block. right above oil filter. For a 1995 the 1st digit up should be an "S".

no lt1's are aluminum from the factory and ive never seen any aftermarket ones. the heads are but not the block. the caprices were updated last any time they changed the engine if that helps.

Don't know if you know this, or if its relevant, but 93-94 LT1 are OBD1, 95 LT1 is OBD 1.5, 96-97 is OBD2. 93-94 are non-vented optis, and 95 and later are vented opti. If you can find a corvette LT1, it will be a 4 bolt main, therefore stronger from the get go. Also, 95 Lt1s are arguably the most powerful, cause they had a slightly higher CR. Hopefully some of that helps.

Your gonna have to change the harnesses regardless if going to a V-8. Your gonna need an LT1 harness with a coresponding PCM.
