  • What did GM guests talk about?

Since I was WAYYYYY too late at the M&G to see the 5th gen, I was curious of what the GM guests talked about. Did they say anything exciting about the 5th gen or were they just shooting the breeze?

didn't really say anything we didn't already know. Only thing they slightly confirmed is that there may be turbo 4 bangers down the road. Also pretty much nixed pontiac f-body coming back.

What I found interesting was that when asked about TTops they didn't say "They are not coming back" GM did not rule them out. They said there would be a sunroof but TTops are not out of the picture. Sounds like they are trying to find a way to bring it back.

It was really great having them there. I remember one comment made was that we were the first real car show for the mules to see -- in other words, we were the first large group to get this honor. They answered as many questions as they could, ans skirted around the ones that they obviously couldn't asnwer. Let's face it, a lot of the things are "still in development" and won't be firmed up for awhile.

You don't listen very well do you? They said the whole side of the car is one big stamping that's a HUGE structural part of the car. You can't just hack out the roof section and hope it will work. It wasn't designed for T tops and because of crash standards, will probably never get them. They didn't flat out say NO because the car wasn't designed with them in mind, only a sunroof and even then there is additional structure for the sunroof roof from what Al told me when I asked about the "reverse mohawk" and how a sunroof works with the roof.

I heard it the same way nate did and i also talked to one of the guys about it after. I told the guy "it sounds like it just needs some engineering to work" and he just said "well, maybe!" (might not be verbatim, i cant remember) IMO, its 2008 now, we can come up with a better mechanism for t-tops than just crappy latches. Look whats been done with hardtop convertables! If an improved method can be engineered for a low enough cost, i think we will see them again. The people have spoken on that subject and GM doesnt ignore their pleas.

GM has been pretty good about speaking up when things arent going to happen. They definitely did not say no to that one.

What i gathered is that t-tops will not be availible at start of the production, but they are trying to make them work.

The other observation im making is that if the side of the car is all one piece, as they said... man that is going to be some huge repair costs!!! I hope its just a framerail underneath the body so the sheetmetal can be replaced.

Anyway, this was by far the most interesting point of discussion that came up.

It would, the thing I noticed though when that was being discussed I was looking at the width of the car, and looking at the roof, the damn things would be huge, the car looks very wide. So I can see storage of them in the car with this one not being a hatchback possibly being an issue. Might take up the whole trunk.

lol, if you would like to consider the two seconds of space in the back of my 4th gen a trunk, go right ahead.

the roof has a "reverse mohawk" in it, and if the t-bar was the size of the mohawk, they wouldnt be that bad. It would be a somewhat wider t-bar like on the 2nd gens... and a wide t-bar would a be a good place to relocate structure to.

but on the size note.... the whole car still looks huge to me, especially the height.
