When I said investments I meant in that there is no return on the money put into the initial sale. Like buying a brand new Camaro or any car and leaving it stock is not a good investment in that cars depreciate. As soon as you sign and drive it off the lot, it depreciates. If you're a person who spends more money afterward to build/add/restore a car for the purpose of selling (or eventually selling after becoming bored racing the same car) than any car would be a good investment if you know what you're doing. However being that the car on topic is new, gm's demographic market is people who are going to buy it and leave it stock. The price will dictate that. New cars aren't priced to sell to those looking to build and make money, so unless you plan on buying one for the purpose of buildiing up, it is not a good investment. And for those who are capable of doing that, congrats on being so rich or being a famous/sponsored driver who gets free or below retail deals on new cars to build and race.Last edited by cncmachinist2; March 8th, 2008, 11:07 PM.Yeah, but mine's still louder than yours!

Even if you buy a new car and "mod" it, you still won't make money on it.Originally posted by cncmachinist2 View PostWhen I said investments I meant in that there is no return on the money put into the initial sale. I dont necessarily agree jeff, Z28s were the superior car as a performance package in the 1st gens mostly because of suspension and having a lighter motor that could put down the same times at the track. SS was more luxurious (and therefore expensive) because of all the other options you could have like A/C, whereas Z28 was top performer like a 1LE car would be. Saying its not the top option depends on what your are comparing... performance data or price tag/creature comforts. Z28s started out as only hardtops/4spd much like new 1LEs were only hardtop: they are cars with one goal in mind. Regardless of whether or not it was ever top dog (i think it was), Z/28 used to stand for a lot more than it does now. The modern day Z06 has some of the same characteristics i would expect in a new Z28Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostThe Z28 has never been the top option package for a Camaro...unless they didn't make a SS or IROC that year...the SS has always been the top of the line car.
And cars aren't good investments?
You're not buying the right cars...lol...

I'm going all the way back to 1967, not just 4th gens.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View PostI dont necessarily agree jeff, Z28s were the superior car as a performance package in the 1st gens mostly because of suspension and having a lighter motor that could put down the same times at the track. The Z28 started out as an option package in 1967 specifically for Trans Am Series road racing, which mandated a maximum of 305 cubic inches (the Z28 took a 327 motor with a 283 crank to make 302 cubic inches).
But this was by no means the hottest engine for the Camaro. Depending on the year, there were three different 396 motors available, in 325, 350, and 375 hp form, along with a L89 aluminum head version for the 396/375.
All those were only available in SS form, and the quick ratio steering and F41 suspension could be ordered in coupe or convertible.
Move into the 70s, and again the 396s (now officially 402s) are only available in SS form until they discontinued it for 73. When the big block died, the SS died.
Now skip ahead to 96, and the SS returns as a SLP special built 305 hp car, and the SS has been the top dog ever since.
The 1LE cars really replaced what the Z28 was originally intended for...a road racing specialty option...and the Z28 option became simply the entry level way to get a V8 Camaro, and was superceded at the top of the food chain by even by IROCs.
Again, from a marketing perspective, Chevrolet has always had the SS as the top mark whether it's a Nova, Impala, Chevelle, or Camaro.
I think where people lose sight of this is where for so many years there was no SS Camaro, and the top-of-the-line was a Z28. But that will never change corporate direction going forward for a SS.Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! AN ENGINE THAT SHAKES MY INTERNAL ORGANS LIKE THEY GOT PARKINSON'S! thats basically what i was saying in more detail.
But hottest engine or not... the DZ302 could compete with SS cars. Its TA roots are what made it such a bad-ass mouse motor.
And im not sure i agree about it being the top mark either. Every one of the examples you listed, with exception of maybe the camaro - are cars whose base model are PURELY a daily driver. Nothing more than a grocery go getter. Even a base camaro is somewhat of a sports car IMO. There has never been a corvette SS and most people did NOT want a corvette SS when the blue devil was going to be called that... GM listened and called it the ZR1.
Has a Z badge ever been under SS in terms of performance? (except 4th gens when SLP got involved) The top model of everything is usally a Z-code. My truck isnt even a sports car but it is badged with a Z code to indicate a special performance function, and it resales for more than one that doesnt have it.
Z24, Z34, Zwhatever... its usually top dog for its intended purpose. Z28 was top dog for auto-crossing camaros, much like Z06 corvettes were and ZR1 is.

thats the key detail.Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostThe 1LE cars really replaced what the Z28 was originally intended for...a road racing specialty option
I personally dont care whether or not the Z gets the top engine. Id like it to be the top package performer it used to be... but i dont think there is room for that much diversity in a modern lineup for it to NOT have a different engine.Last edited by JoeliusZ28; March 9th, 2008, 10:29 AM.-Joel

LOL...already been done, Rolo...we're just regurgitating other people's work.Originally posted by DeLaRosa25 View Postmaybe you two history buffs should team up and right a book about Camaros! Mifbody Version
But back to the point...
ALL the cars listed above were "grocery getter" cars back in the day.
It's the unique little options that set the special ones apart from the grocery getters...you actually had to be aware that there was another box to check to get a Z28 in 1967...they didn't just get delivered to dealerships.
But after, really, 1969 the Z28 became commonplace. And as it's evolved over the last 40 years, that "option" (if you can call it that anymore) has been greatly de-valued...it has completely lost it's original roots and intended uses, although it claims not to.Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! I think the SS should have the CTSV motor and Z28 should have the LS3, I just hope Z28 handles better that pretty much everything. I cant wait for Top Gear to not only test the new Camaro, but you know they will do an American Muscle shoot out between the Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger.1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 - 6 Speed
