  • Project: 1976 Corvette

    The Project:
    1976 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
    -350/auto
    -L-48
    -69k miles
    -Red Interior
    -T-tops

Corvette was purchased new in Atlanta, GA in June 1976. The original owner put just over 59,000mi on the car when the owner suddenly died in 1985 of a heart attack. His wife shortly after moved it to a horse barn where it sat until she died in 2005. Her kids put it on eBay and Rob won it for $2485 in the fall of 2005. Him and his grandpa went and picked it up on a car hauler and brought it back to Michigan. They changed the fluids, put in a new battery, and it fired up! He's drove it like that ever since!

    The People:
The Corvette is my cousin Rob's. Many years ago when I was about 7 and he was like 5 my uncle and aunt got divorced. Rob started living with his mom in Stanwood, MI, about 170 miles from Ortonville (my home town). Fast forward 14 years or so and I search for my last name on Myspace. I about $#!t myself when I seen it was my cousin. We started talked and found we had a lot in common. Started hanging out, he started coming to Halley family events again, and now we are restoring his Corvette. Funniest thing is that I started Ferris in the fall of 2004 and he was dual enrolled at Ferris during high school until he graduated in 2006. We had several classes in the same building at the same time and never crossed paths!

    The Plans:
-Engine - 355sbc - 1976 4 bolt block, stock crank, stock rods, Comp 274 Cam, Edlebrock intake, Edlebrock 650cfm carb, longtube headers, 2.75" full exhaust with no muffler, many Comp Cams valvetrain components, and more.

-Transmission - Eventually swapped to a manual but for now doing a flush and filter change.

-Interior - Just clean it up really good. It's in really nice shape except for being red.

-Stereo - Panosonic CD player, Panosonic 4x6 kick panel and dash speakers.

-Wheels - Whatever is on it now. I personally thing they are ghetto but Rob likes them and its his car.

-Brakes - Rebuild calipers, new rotors, new pads, flush system.

-Suspension - The suspension is really solid except for needing new sway bar end links.

-Paint - It's getting a new front and rear bumper then being completely painted. Goes into the body shop by mid April 2008.

-Other - Upgrade several components like battery, ball joints, replace steering lines, etc.

    1999 Pontiac Trans Am - LS1 - M6 - ITSSLOW - 12.998@109.59 - SOLD
    1994 Chevrolet Camaro
    - 3.4L - M5 - ITSSLWR - 16.558@85.38
    2003 Chevrolet Blazer

      4/5/08

Today I changed the door locks, tore out the stock radio, and cleaned up the interior some. Rob only had the key to the passenger side door so he'd have to lock the driver's door, crawl over the center console, and climb out the passenger side door and lock it. The radio is sitting in my apartment now because I have clean up the Panosonic harness. The guy he bought the radio from rigged up the harness something fierce. Tomorrow I'm putting in the new speakers and radio.

        Sounds like a fun project.
At work we just finished restoring a 76 vette and the owner asked, "how can we make this engine more powerful?" We ended up putting a 385hp crate motor in it and also made the switch to a 4 speed.

If your cleaning up the interior, you might want to pull out the heater box and replace the heater core. Usually its better to replace them before you make a mess of the interior.
Inspect the bottom of the core support, it is common for them to rot out.
I would suggest gettting fiberglass bumpers. If not I have a set of rubber ones that I can sell ya cheap.
IMO set of rally wheels would look pretty good on there with some 255/60 all the way round.
Rebuilding the front suspension on these cars is easy to do and it makes it alot nicer to drive.
Make sure the rear brake rotors are still riveted to the spindles. If they are not air will get in the calipers over time. We rebuild dozens of rear 63-82 vette trailering arms every year.

The interior is extremely clean besides the plastic seat backs. The car even has the original leather T-top covers. They are mint!

The heater core was replaced in October before he parked the car for spring. The core support is solid, I was looking at it today. The bumpers are being repaced with rubber ones. He's just waiting for the new front to arrive at the body shop until it goes in. Until all the parts at the body shop are in he's leaving it at his place for me to work on. I can't stand the wheels but he likes whats on there and it's his car. He has the stock rims in his garage but he put these on when he got the car. I don't know what the "rally" rims look like the but stockers looks like these....

                Yep, those are ralleys.

On another note, when swapping stuff out, DON'T THROW ANYTHING AWAY!

You've still got all the original ignition shielding there, and that set alone can go for $400-500.

Heads, intake, carb, throw NOTHING away.

Almost every nut and bolt on that thing can be sold to hard-core Corvette people.

Why would you be removing the ingnition shielding? On the motor we built we customized the shielding to fit around the headers. In the end it looks much cleaner than wires running along the valve covers. C1 and C2 Ignition shielding is worth a good penny but I would be shocked to see C3 ignition shielding bringing 500.

If it were my car I would put on aluminu wheels like these

If anyone wants a 1976 vette engine(50,000 miles, includes oil pan, exhaust manifolds, distributor, carb,) let e know.

Those wheels belong on a truck, not a vette. They're hideous! Bump up to some nice 17's. I saw one running around Cascade area a couple years ago with some nice 17" billets and it looked really sharp. The car was pretty stock looking other than that.

You act like this is the first car I've worked on.... I still have original ball joints from my 1995 Sonoma that I sold 2 years go. I still have rounded off bolts from my Grand Marquis. I don't throw ANYTHING away. Kinda pisses my dad off...

We aren't removing anything. The engine by is going to look totally original. Those Edlebrock valve covers are being replaced with OEM peices he paid out the ass for.

His car, his taste, his choice. I don't agree with the wheel choice either but its $5000 into an engine build, body work, and misc fixes or $2500 rims/tires and start saving again for another 8 months to get the body done. I think I'd rather have a nice body with crappy rims than fly rims and bumpers that look like that! He has a really nice set of 17's picked out but they are VERY pricey.
