small update*

haven't really done anything to the car.. a friend of mine picked up the mechanical Q-jet that TylerT/AZ28 so kindly supplied to me.

Q-jet ID numbers (17084226), I'll decode whats going on here a little.

170 - 1976 or newer
8 - 80's unit
4 - built in a year that ends in 4 (84)
2 - 4bbl
2 - Chevrolet
6 - Automatic Transmission

so the carb is an electric choke, but non computer controlled and was set up for use on an automatic transmission for trucks from 81-86. and in this case it came off an 84 GM pickup of some sort. now my concern was that it was having it work with the 700r4 transmission in the Trans Am. but Tyler told me it was hooked up to the 700r4 in the truck it came off of. so shouldn't be any issues with the detent (TV) cable hookup. so I ordered a master rebuild kit for the carb for about $38 and am going to get it all cleaned up and rebuilt. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress.

It's all good, I knew you weren't blaming me.....I just wanted it to be clear that kid was a hack. I hope he's doing better with his engineering degree.

This is one of the reasons I was not considering a "restoration" on it. Too costly, and problematic to go that route. This car needs to be a restofication: somethings restored, other things (engine-drivetrain) modified.
no worries! was definitely not blaming you! haha.. I wasn't planning on doing a full restore.. just figured going back to cc quadrajet would keep me headache free because I know thats how its *supposed* to work.. but it will probably be more headaches to get it back to that point.. so I guess since my 383 will be non computer controller.. that it won't matter anyways.

So last night I got to dig into the engine a little more.. the wiring is jacked up! now I'm wondering if there was a reason the guy decided to go to the non computer controlled qjet.. the fans were wired in by twisted wires together.. random parts of the wiring harness are just pulled out and are just hanging, etc, I forgot to look and see if the computer is even there.. so now its making me wonder if maybe I should just keep it non computer controlled..

the cruise control cable is just flopping around in the engine bay.. a bunch of vacuum lines aren't even hooked up or capped off to random stuff haha! looks like I have my work cut out for me.
TylerT/AZ28 can i get some info / pics on the mechanical qjet you have?

Yeah it does say that Mike, I can't explain why. My car has never been touched, it's an HO motor, and yet doesn't have that carb code......Makes me wonder if the Van Nuys (CA) cars left the plant with one carb, and the Norwood cars with another?

Good to know. I was just using that carb list and I thought I read it was a HO 305 engine.

That's for a manual transmission. Last digit being odd=Manual trans

Jeremy the numbers on mine are as follows: 17084208.....Sorry I don't have photos, couldn't get them to upload to photobucket again.

Look for a 17084205 carb to be OEM correct.
