  • [Project] Nate's 1998 Z28 Project

As many of you know I bought another car. Its a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. I bought the car to flip but knew I would probably fall in love with it, as I have.

As with almost everything we buy, it was rough. With a lot of cleaning, some paint work, and some TLC its going to make a beautiful car.

Lets start off with the worst part:

The car was vandalized. Looks like it was tag'd with spray paint and then lit on fire. Guy I bought it from was older and bought it to put the motor and trans into an older car. Im going to restore it, drive it, and have fun with it.

Standard leather interior, need some floor mats but its 98% mint.

Sadly this means the black car is up for sale. Wife will not let me have both.

Its got the stock LS1 with T56. Has a Thunder Racing 224 cam, Spec 3 clutch/flywheel, some ported stuff, some light weight stuff. Much different than my LT1 car. It doesnt feel fast, but it is. Has LT's into ORY, into 2.5in flowmaster. The car breath in very well, but can not breath out quite as well- theres work to be done here. Big thanks to Scott for cleaning the engine bay up for me.

I used some Meguires Ultimate Compound and the car cleaned up pretty decent:

The hood had black vinyl stripes on it, I took those off. Overall this hood is pretty well trashed. Its been fixed before, and this is where the spray paint was lit on fire(we think). I have decided that fixing it correctly is just too much time and money, it would be better spend on a different Z28 hood or a SS hood.
I sanded it down and painted it black primer, then plastidiped it. This hood is temporary.

    Here are some before/afters

For the future it needs some wheels, new springs/shocks that are more my style, 3in exhaust/ TSP TD, tint, whistler headlights, and I would like the newer style steering wheel.

Looks great dude. Even the flat black hood in the pictures look good.

      Nice project!
Just list the black car for too much so it won't sell.
      Keep both!

Looking forward to keeping tabs on this! Questions:

        1. Why spray primer, then dip? Why not just dip?

        2. Why newer steering wheel? The newer-style ones are way too big IMO, I personally like the older ones better.

Also, needs new grille, that billet one's gotta go.

Sprayed primer because I had not used plasti dip before, if I didnt like the plasti dip I was going to take it off and just rock the black primer.

Ive always liked the newer ones, steering wheel radio controls

Trying to solve the gear whine.

Would the torque arm have anything to do with it?

A lot of improperly installed gears tend to whine.

Nice project! Congrats on the car.
You have an ls1 with a 6 speed and a 10 bolt... Get used to the whine.

Can you elaborate on "improperly installed" for me? Id like to try and tackle it my self because I really want to use the 400+ that gears are going to cost for paint.

I spent most of today cleaning odds and ends. Door jams, bumper, did a few things to the interior. Its really turning into a nice car. As soon as my black car sells(assuming this one doesnt) I am going to get some wheels, and tint.

Pretty sure they don't get shimmed correctly and make it so the gears don't mesh properly. I'm not a gear expert though so ill let someone else chime in on that.

Does it have 4.10's in it? If so give up trying to fix it now...

Id just buy another 10 bolt with stock 3.42s. Those 4.10s will break

Glad to see your leaning towards keeping it! Next thing on your list, A proper battery hold down.
