  • [Project] 1998 Camaro Z28 NBM LS1(der what I was thinking?)

Hopefully this doesn't come down to a "counting your chickens" deal, but all the wheels are in motion for me to pick up a 1998 Camaro Z28 Navy Blue Metallic within the next week. Money is en route, title is en route, just need to get the car en route.

I've set some ground rules for this car. A $3200 budget - once I hit it I'm done, I will not allow myself to go over with this car. I can, however, use money from selling spare parts to finish it if need be. At LEAST one car has to go after it's done. This Camaro, the Iroc-Z 'vert, the Bel Air, or the Jimmy. Or a combination of those.

    The plans:
    5.3 converted to LS1 intake/accessories
    Headers
    4l60e
    New tan seat covers
    New front bumper cover
    New hood
    Clear parking lenses
Using my spare 17x8 Eagle 077's (new 255/40/17 tires already mounted)

I'll use this thread for questions and off topic conversation, we all know it's going there anyways

Willing to turn it into a Huron Speed sponsor car if Jonny would like

      Thanks!

I'd like to get it finished and possibly trade up to a T/A or a nice Datsun Z. Or possibly sell it and the Jimmy to get a Trailblazer or 9-7x. I have a hard time letting go of cars though.

          Here comes the first question!

I picked up a '98 harness and PCM for $269.31 from eBay. It needs two of the square o2 connectors replaced, and one connector is completely missing. I think it's for the IAT, I'm not finding a grey two pin connector on this harness.

Should I just convert to the 5 wire truck MAF or keep it stock? Not sure how 85mm MAF's fit...not even sure if the Camaro comes with an air intake system

1998 is year specific. 99-02 need a lot of re-pinning and some wires added to work in a 98. I didn't find any for sale on LS1tech and the other harnesses (w/o PCM) on ebay are $360-380

1st off congrats on the new whip!

What are the details of the car? What does it come with? Roller?

                        What are your goals?

You could convert to the 5 pin MAF but your going to need to tune the car as it throws off the fuel trims.

I just picked up a 2002 PCM on ebay for $70 shipped for my 98 and I'm going thru with the re-pin, etc, to get everything to work. STAY AWAY from the 98 computer and do yourself a favor and get a 01-02 computer. You WILL regret getting a 98. Tons of people have done the swaps and there is a lot of documentation out there on how to do the swap.

I'll have to do some more research, but I was told it is easier to get the 98 harness then update instead of going the other way.

The car is just a complete roller, sans wheels. The front bumper is cracked, Jeremy said it was likely from getting repo'd. Regarless - new front cover is in order. There are a few small dents in the hood - live with them or maybe have my aunt/unlce pick up a VFN Sunoco hood for me. Seats are shot, looking to get the cheap covers.

Anyway, the car will be done as cheap as possible. I plan to get it driving for ~$2700, and should be just under that mark if everything goes well...I hope all the parts sellers don't get crazy on their asking amounts!

                              Connectors ordered.

Got a line on a 50k mile LM7 for cheap and a high miles 4l60e. Not many 2wd transmissions around these parts
