  • [Project] 1987 Trans Am or WTF was I thinking?

I decided to pick up an 87 Trans so I could at least get into driving an f-body this year. "The Project" (my 89 IROC) is still two or three years away from getting on the road.

This 87 TA is loaded - LG4, 700R4, WS6, power mirrors, power poor locks, power mirrors, tilt, cruise (work?), AC (work?). Blue with gray interior and 113KM's (or 70,818 miles) on it. Floor boards are clean but found two holes in the bottom frame rails under the door on each side. Nothing that a plasma cutter, scrap metal, spot weld, silicone and EZ spray bed liner wouldn't fix.

Also, spent 20 minutes pulling sand out of the frame rail holes...maybe it was raced on a beach.

Exhaust was shot so I picked up used Magnalow one off kijijji. Dash pad needs to be replaced (have new on in the basement), interior is in fair condition (but lots of elbow grease needed). Centre console had $2.06 Canadian and $.80 in US...coffee shop here I come

Rear spoiler is rotted. Plastic clips are gone and metal clips that go inside the spoiler are non existent. Also, no way to secure the spoiler with the bolts thru the trunk. Have to find another way to install the spoiler - maybe super glue, silicone or even virgin sacrifice.

More pics next week when we install the exhaust, swap out the rear brakes, swap in emerg brake cables, fix a vacuum leak, etc.....

Oh yea, car came with no rims Had to put the IROC rims on the car. Somehow the car looks more.....masculine now.

Should be done in a few weeks. Just want to get the car on the road and drive....sand and all.....

Here she is no the trailer heading off the garage for some TLC

Thanks guys...more pics to come next week.

The car should be on the road for just under $2,000 in total. I pulled the carpet to check the floor boards and they are super clean.

Couple more pics of the car now.

Spent yesterday putting in new rear brakes and emerg. brake cables. Found out the pass rear caliper was shot and need to get it rebuilt.

Noticed the drivers side pads looked a lot better than the pass side. Had to fight like crazy to remove the bolt that holds the lca in place so we could drop it in order to remove the bolt on the back of the caliper. Guess the last brake job was drivers pads only!!

Next week will be exhaust install, shocks and stereo.

Nice project. Glad to see another 3rd gen getting saved. Looks like you caught that under-body rust just in time.

good start, keep up the work and pics, pull the interior and see how rust is on the inside, but it doesnt look horrible from what you showed us.

Those iroc wheels dont look half bad on a firebird either.

nice project! thats a common place for rust, the firebird i just sold had holes there too despite the rest of the car being pretty solid.

Great, now cut the rear seat tubs out, weld in a flat plate and use the new-found space below to put true duals under the car! Who really uses the back seats anyways?

Thats what I plan on doing with mine. Theyre smashed up with a hammer right now and it never made any difference even with the back seats in place.
