  • [Restoration] ITSSLOW's CR250 Resto

Recently picked up a 1991 CR250 from a buddy of mine for $400. Bike was UGLY, nonrunning, and in need of some TLC. The guy is honestly an idiot. He was having all kinds of problems with the bike but after tearing into I seen all were very small mistakes on his part that lead to big problems when riding it.

Here is what I started with in Late Feb... Right off the bat you'll notice bent levers, horrible plastic, missing plastic, missing handgaurd, tore down top end, tore up seat cover, and just a lot more of maintenence like tearing out the suspension bushings, cleaning them up, and redoing them.

Loaded up in the truck for the ride home from Romeo.

Within 2 hours of having it home.

Frame sandblasted and powdercoated. I know gloss white will be a PITA to keep clean but it was the original color and honestly I kinda dig it.

Engine dropped back in. Still needed to replace top end and paint it up a bit but the frame wouldn't balance on the stand with no engine.

Suspension bearings getting heated out with the help of my old friend bud light.

Swingarm and rear shock back on after a quick rebuild. Done for free since my buddy bought the parts for it. Just never paid to have it done.

Subframe and airbox on. I sent the airbox through the dishwasher to get it clean inside.

Forks! We have forks!!! Didn't need a rebuild because buddy just had them rebuilt by Tech-Care and only rode once since.

    Plastic starting to go on.

I know that black backgrounds with white numbers are for 125's/250 4stokes/lightweight class but I just think it looks better.

After the shakedown ride. I'll have to snap some pics after I get it power washed.

It ran great until I sunk it in a "puddle" which turned out to be 2ft deep. Drained the clutch fluid yesterday and it was like mud! About 10 minutes before that I ended up flying off the side of a hill and rolled like 30ft down a 60 degree hill. Took my buddy and I (both are like 160lbs soaking wet) nearly 20 minutes to drag it back up the hill.

All in all I'm super pumped. First non-Yamaha I've ever owned and I feel like shit because of it but I couldn't pass up the deal, small project, and the chance to get back on a bike again.

In the near future I'll be finding an FMF Gnarly pipe and putting it on. Besides that it'll just be maintenance. Over the course of the summer I'll be looking for a 2000+ Yamaha YZ250.

Two big upsides to the build where it came with brand new paddle and a Weisco top end kit with piston and rings. I just needed to pick up gaskets and clean the powervalves. He was having a problem of very poor acceleration but I'm guessing it was because of the powervalves being so gooped (technical term) up they could barely move.

Awsome Man. I did the same thing with a 1993 yz80 I bought from my buddy for 100 bucks. It had a blown topend, and the clutch was gone. Good work

Thanks. I restored a 1991 YZ80 when I broke my back when I was 16. Really took my mind of not being able to ride everyday like I was used too.

Ha! Never been a CR125 that could keep up to my YZ125 CR250 that could hold a candle to my YZ250. What really kills it with the 125's is a lot of years run a 5spd. They just run out of gear way before power.

Ill drag race your Yama-ha-ha-ha's with my 98 CR250 any day. Even an 09 YZF450 couldnt pull my bike. Only mod i have is boyesen reeds

Don't have my 01 YZ250 any more. Sold it 5-6 years ago. Only mods were soft terrain tires, boyesen power series reeds, and suspension built by Tech Care. I got hurt and sold it before I really had the change to dump any real money into it.

450's period are over rated. The only places they really beat up on 2strokes IMO is super slippery situations. Everything else a 2 stroke 250 is faster stock to stock and same mods to same mods.

they are easier to ride, but i totally agree. i see nothing that justifies the cost in them. Ive ridden the hell out of my bike and in 10 years all ive invested in it is a piston and some gear oil.

That's nothing at all! Impressive really that's all you've went through. I'd go through a top end, sprockets/chain, tires, reeds, and set of plastic a year. Understandable considering I was on the bike 12-15 hours a week and racing 3 weekends a month. My bikes didn't exactly stay mint for very long.
