I always let my bike get up to temperature before I give it much RPM, which seems to DRASTICALLY prolong the life of the piston ring. I also clean my plastics after just about every ride with WD40. Still on the original chain and sprockets, but theyre about toast. Both are rounded off and ive taken 2 links out of the chain. Ive also kept that well lubricated. Im figuring on replacing them after I hit the dunes memorial day... no sense in grinding a bunch of sand into the new set.

I powerwashed my bike after mostly each ride. Just that much time on a bike takes its toll on the cosmetics and parts. I always let my bike warm up but its just a lot of time on a set of rings. Same with the plastics. Doesn't matter how much I clean them if I'm continuously taking off from the starting line with 7 bikes in front of me throwing rocks at me at point blank range. Track day puts a lot more abuse on a bike than the dunes. Sand is pretty bad on bearings/chains though.

all carb'd yzf 450 are over rated.

I think a new FI bike would blow you away. Still not worth the cost but they look wicked fast.

Look at the test they did with a 09 yz 250 vs 09 yzf 250. the four stroke was faster like 90% of time.

Granted all this testing is on a track and your bike is a dune machine lately.

The FI bikes have better response but they aren't any faster to me. A buddy had an 07 and now has a 2010. They are both quick and the 10 gets up and goes but its nothing special. Toss a set of gears on it and an exhaust and we might have something though.

FI would give the same gains to a 2 stroke though.

and I dont believe an 250F beating a 250... whats the point of a 450 then if 450s only barely beat 250s?

No one is doing FI on a 2 stroke ( ) though so there is no way to do a comparo.

The reason a 250F can beat a 250 is on a track. No two stroke has had a frame enhancement since 2005 when the yamaha's finally went alum. The 4 strokes get upgraded every year, major upgrade every few years.

In a drag race or riding around the dunes a 450 haz no advantages over a 250. They are heavier, harder to start, and chew through tires.

On a track is where the 450 shines. They are not dirt bikes ,they are track bikes.

I would love to have my YZ back, still plan on getting another one. I understand why people get 450's though: they are fun, fast, and current. Many of the younger kids have never even been on a 2 stroke

I do see your point there. 4 strokes are the future and all the money goes into them. It's no different than the open class becoming obsolete and the brands putting all their time and money into the 125 and 250's. Hell, a CR 500 remained basically unchanged from like 87-03 or whenever they finally did away with it. At least Yamaha still makes a 125 and a 250. Kawasaki and Suzuki have done away with their 2stoke MX line-up. Not sure if they still make a CR125/250 or not.

Four strokes are the future because of POLITICS. Whether its AMA classes giving them the advantage or environmentalist groups pressuring the industry it is ALL politics. I dont buy for a minute that 2 stroke technology "ran out." Two strokes could still dominate the sport if the classes were catered to them.

Also, honda went to an aluminum frame in 97. The early 2000 era bikes handled pretty damn good.

What said nate is right that four strokes are the future because that is where the money is going. But that doesnt mean two strokes are dead. Engine swaps are not impossible, and niether is fuel injection. I still plan on building an EFI CR someday. EFI has been used on 2 strokes in snowmobiles for years, therefore there is even a wealth of parts already available to start the project.

My no means is 2 stroke technology dead.

That FI CR is easier than you think. My best friend works for a company that takes carb'd vehicles and turns them FI. Anything from zero turn lawn mowers to dirt bikes. They have a KX500 they are putting FI on right now actually.

Honda was the first one to give up 2 strokes back in 03/04.

Didn't know that. Never been a huge Honda fan. Like I said before, I got this bike purely on the cheap price, parts that came with it, and an easy way for me to get back on a bike after 5 years.

They've been in business for years. They do most of their work on cheap ass 100-200cc chinease bikes. They don't do it for individual people but for the companies themself. Since so many people over there that use bikes as their only vehicle the emissions are crazy. Most of the other projects are just for S&G or for individual customers. That KX500 I know is for a private guy.

Just looked online. That's actually wrong. They produced CR line up until 2007.

Correct. CR's never made it past Gen3 aluminum frame. The 125 was dropped first then came the 250. The later model ones are regraded as crap by most of the dirtbike community. Id take one in an instant, they look sweet.

Yamaha actually changed little things like breaks, jets, etc on the 250 and still does.

                                2010 YZ 250 FTW.
