  • [Project] Darrenscamaro: The never ending project

Probably about time I made one of these, for those who are interested.

    1992 Camaro RS 25th Anniversary

    The Plan:

PAINT! Lets get this thing painted so it does not look so CRAPPY all the time. I have been wanting to get my car painted for as long as I can remember and most of you know that. I have run into a few setbacks financially that has prevent work to be done on the car. I am determined to get my car painted this season as well as a few other things. With that said I have been trying my own hand at body work. My car had some rough spots, not as bad as some thirdgens out there but it defiantly needs some love and attention. With that said I am a TOTAL noob at body work (for the most part) So I am attempting this on the fly, I have some good advice and some extra eyes and hands coming to look at it tomorrow and to lend a hand. Without anymore, here is what I completed today and what I am working with...

More of the plan is to replace the hood so I dont have to try and strip the stripes off, I am looking to buy a hood I found on CL its flat with no stripes but I have not had luck meeting up with the guy. That leaves the stripes on the trunk lid, any ideas to get them off. Brian said he may be able to help me grind them off or something so I might take him up on that offer. Also does anyone know the dimensions (location and sizes) of the STOCK placement and size for the 25th anniversary stripes? I am having them made and need that or I have to make a template out of mine. I may just end up buying some reproduction ones I am not sure yet.

Nice work Darren. Keep it commin. Only suggestions so far is get all the rust out of the metal, and dont use filler over old paint. Id take it to bare metal if you really want it right. And for the stripes, Just use a sander/buffer with a 36 grit 8in sanding disk. Or just a DA with 36 grit, thoes stripes will rip right off like nothing.

Thanks Curt I wanted/needed you to chime in. Most of that was taken down to bare metal but thanks for the tip. I am not done sanding by any means and that is just the passenger side of the car as well. Thanks for the hints on the stripes I am hoping I can pull them off, that saves a ton of $$ from the body shop

Looks good so far. Progress is progress!

I went the lazy route and swapped hatches to get rid of my stripes. I got a killer deal so it made sense. Cant wait to see it.

Sticking with white? What color stripes?

                        So True
If you do all the prep yourself then take it to be painted it will save on the cost since most of the labor hours are spent in prep.

Darren if you need a hand let me know as I have a little bit of experience in Body and Paint.

Oh, I ment strip the whole car to bare metal too. Has your car ever been repainted? or is that original paint? And Even though your sanding the rust spots to bare metal, there is still rust pores in it, and you want to get the rust out of there, you need to get some Acid, it will eat it out.
