  • So on the piston rings you think that because you guys honed the cylinders and you used the same piston rings that the rings were to slopy in the cylinder. I know that the cylinder walls should have some roughness to them in order to promote oil retention. The question i have is how did you align the slits in the piston rings. The slits should alternate sides like if your wrist pin is at position 3 and 9 o'clock then your piston rings should alternate where the slits are in order to prevent massive blow by and leak down. It seems really weird that that much gas worked its way into the oil... Well hope everything turns around for you guys. It seems like lately everyone on here has had a streak of bad luck.

Although if you did hone the top more than the bottom and created a "loose spot" than it would make sense that you were getting a lot of gas in the bottom end.

    • We never took the pistons out of the engine so we didn't touch the rings. But - yeah like you said, if we sanded away more at the top then maybe that's what it was.

      • We honed the top ridge off the cylinder off at best we honed 1" of cylinder wall. With 63,000 reported miles didn't feel need to really work over the rings, cylinders, and bearings. That might of been one of our mistakes.
The inside of the engine really looked clean and the heads, valves appeared to support reported miles.

          • It sure will! This year we get to do laps around MIS. I wouldn't miss Superfest this year for anything.

            • Mmk, so, I've been thinking. You honed the tops of the cylinder walls. So, you took shavings off of the walls. Where did those shavings go? That doesn't explain the gas in the oil, but maybe the shavings?

              • The honing didn't really create big shavings as it did dust, if that makes sense. We then got all the dust out, washed the cylinders down with WD-40 and applied a thin coat of assembly grease to the cylinder walls to lube them up and prevent rust.

                • Next time i would use an oil that has detergents in it in order to clean up the cylinder walls, the assembly lube might have kept the "dust" trapped on the walls.

                    • unfortunately since we didn't check the bearings and other stuff out we can't say for sure.

                        • I just ordered a set of LS7 lifters - found a good deal for about half of what Comp Cam's lifters are. I was hesitant to order until someone on CZ28 said he used stock pushrods with LS7 lifters and had no problems. So at least whenever we get the engine back I'll have the new lifters to go in.

                              • your in the same boat i was in last year, I know the waiting sucks but for me it was worth the wait, I still have a few things to button up. Maybe replace the valve seals but nothing major.

i have been trying to put miles on it but it's hard to when i work all week plus working 3rd shift doesn't make it any easier, so i take out as much as i can on my days off.
