  • Keep The 6?

I Always hated my V6 but after reading here for a while im not shure what i want to do. Get a V8 or mod the 6. I have to rebuild it if i want to get any serious power but i figure while im at it get the 4.2 stroker kit. Then i was thinking turbo, heads, cam, the works. Lets be realistic with 8:1 compression how much boost can i run and how much power could i realisticly make. And what do you think i can run in the 1/4?

let me pose this question. have you ridden in a v8 car yet?

you can make big horsepower with a six, thats a proven fact. but torque? not so much.

      Let me pose another question.

Are you willing to pay $4-$5 per gallon in Gas while feeding a V8?

whats the difference when mileage is the same other than octane?

Not trying to spite anyone, but i see this arguement all the time and frankly I think its a false assumption. I havent seen any V6 do better on gas than my car. Granted I have full exhaust which helps a ton, I think i even manage 16 miles per gallon when i make 5 passes at the drag strip. I average 24 city, and have pulled 31+ on the highway too.

really what v6 beats that? It is premium but still.

I didn't want to start a v6 bashing thread. I just wanted to know what kind of numbers i could make with it. The only reason i want to keep it is i already put too much money into it fixing stuff. I Figure i should keep it and make it the car i want. That is untill i can aford a 2009 camaro.

Um I wasnt bashing v6s. the very question in your thread title is whether or not to keep the v6, i was only providing input to help you answer that question. The 3.8 is a great engine. but it may or may not be the best platform for what you want to do. If you think it is, then more power to you.

the 09 Camaro is just around the corner. Keep your current car, save up you money for a nice down payment for that 09. We only have what, about 14 months or so to wait!

Do you have any idea how much a 4.2 stroker kit, a turbo, heads/cam, the works would cost you? First ask that question, are you willing to drop over 20 grand into your car? I think a V8 would be a better route to take. Torque is what you will feel, plus an ls1 will respond better to mods later on and you'll be happier in the end vs spending a ton of cash into your v6 and getting beat by a slightly modded ls1.

There's no cheaper way to make power then displacement.

Building your v6 up will be costly and it will get terrible gas mileage.

Building a mild v8 is relatively cheap and it will do alright on gas.

With the gas mileage of LS1 cars as it is, especially a 6spd car, I dont know why they ever made the v6's.

Im in the same boat your in i would really like a v8.
I can get a ls1 that has a nock or something if me and my dad help get this guys camaro running.
What is involved in a v6 to v8 swap?
i know electronics and a different bell housing what else i there?
is there any one on this board that has done a 3.8 A4 to ls1 swap?

bolt on a turbo run 15psi and see how long it lasts you.. enjoy running at least 12s. wont cost more than a ls1 ($4k) plus you dont have to dick around with switching cars. if you happen to blow something then start over, but there are some guys running 20psi on a stock everything motor.
