when one is considering swapping an entire motor or doing internal engine work, yes a turbo could be considered a bolt on in comparisonOriginally posted by Superman09 View Posthahahaha, did you say "bolt on a turbo"?2000 Firebird A4 black hardtop

ya the 3.8 loves boost always has great GM v6 motor and with the right mods you can keep up with a v8 even beat some ... it will cost a bit probably the same amount as it would for you to sell yours and buy a v8 same condition... it all depends how far you want to go, hop in someone with a mild v8 if you think thats plenty for you then the heavy modded v6 will do it and be a nice show piece too, but if a mild v8 still leaves you wanting more then switch to a v8 cause cost wise its gonna be cheeper to make the crazy power in a v8 then v6 when its all finnishedOriginally posted by Frank The TankTook the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. I think I'd rather swap an LS1 then do another turbo setup, especially if I had to fab it all. Soooo many things to go wrong and lots of tuning to be had.Originally posted by 00firebird View Postwhen one is considering swapping an entire motor or doing internal engine work, yes a turbo could be considered a bolt on in comparison

the 4.2l stroker is a torque monster there Joel, you should see the numbers. Then with a turbo, o man, it would be insane the torque and power.
I would build up the 6 if I were you. More unique and not hard to do, the parts are all there and available now for a sweet build.------------------------------------------

to build a nice 6 would not cost 20k to do...unless you are going all out for 500hp-600hpOriginally posted by Superman09 View PostDo you have any idea how much a 4.2 stroker kit, a turbo, heads/cam, the works would cost you? First ask that question, are you willing to drop over 20 grand into your car? I think a V8 would be a better route to take. Torque is what you will feel, plus an ls1 will respond better to mods later on and you'll be happier in the end vs spending a ton of cash into your v6 and getting beat by a slightly modded ls1.
so many misconceptions and bias here in all the v8 member posts, there is just not enough energy in my fingers to type everything.------------------------------------------

pace fab. installs the kit for ya as part of the price of their kit and tunes itOriginally posted by MattODoom View PostYeah a turbo is far, far far from a bolt on. Depending on how you do it you might have to shimmy the motor out just to pull the oil pan and install the drain fitting.
Much easier to do an engine swap IMO.
Makes for an easy install

either option will be expensive and both options will have poor fuel economy
The true question is HOW to go faster for less $$ and that is VERY debatable and HIGHLY depends on the parts to purchase. You can do a junkyard V8 or a Lingnefelter 402.. You can do a junkyard Turbo V6 and fabricate everything yourself or you can buy the best turbos and parts money can get!
So in the end, this argument is pointless and either route works.. pick one and go with it.. either route aint cheap

I dont really think 500-600 horsepower is "all out". It's not really misconception either its just plain and simply easier and more cost effective to build a v8. There are vastly more v8 parts on the market which makes them cheaper. There are many more sources of knowledge for v8's, it's a long tried and true design.Originally posted by 97rs4life View Postto build a nice 6 would not cost 20k to do...unless you are going all out for 500hp-600hp

Another thing about being "unique". "Unique" dont get you down the track. I hear guys on TGO all the time wanting to build up 305's to be unique, well guess what, on the outside it looks just like any other small block chebby, and I dont think anyones really going to care. You're just going to spend more to get what you want.

To each his own I guess, but when you look at the cost and work of dropping a v8 into our v6 cars, the built v6 begins looking really nice and the better route.Originally posted by MattODoom View PostI dont really think 500-600 horsepower is "all out". Built v8s are a dime a dozen, a 12 sec v6 on the other hand, will bring a crowd around a car.
Also there are now a couple sixers in the 11s, and there is one in the 9s...so yea either route will work.
You can get the same power out of a v6, just not the sound. If all you are after is the sound, then yes your only option is going v8------------------------------------------

Not even close, pulling/swapping a motor or just doing the internals beats the hell out of an entire turbo kit. Honestly, people that have not done a turbo kit over look it, i even did before i started installing, had no idea it would be this much work.... No one thinks about all the work but heres a small list.... removal of all parts, exhaust system, ac for me, basically everything in the bay. start bolting pipes on, turbos on, air filters on turbos need to be fabbed to fit somewhere, relocate horns, PS lines, alt, extend alt wire, mount meth kit (tank, pump, controller) run lines, run wires, hook up relay/fuse, drill/tap for meth, oil feed, oil return, set up oil lines, mount scavenge pump, remove front bumper, intercooler install, cold side piping, fuel pump install, injector install, removal of many interior panels to mount guages, run/wire guages, mount lught for meth..... i could keep going.Originally posted by 00firebird View Postwhen one is considering swapping an entire motor or doing internal engine work, yes a turbo could be considered a bolt on in comparison
As for the 20k, he was saying stroker motor, turbo kit, heads/cam, the works, so basically everything that covers and i bet you would hit 20k however i dont no the price differences between ls1 stuff and v6 stuff but a stroker kit and internals would be 3500 plus needing machine work to block, etc. talking 4k, turbo set up with guages, fuel, everything, 7500 ish to do it right, heads/cam,2-3k, fuel rails, lines, injectors to handle this new found power, a rear end and trans to hold this (4k+) It all adds up man.... however the v6 prices could differ but i would guess 20k to do what he said....sigpic

ah the age old question of "whats cheaper, v8 or a v6"
ive always looked at it like this.. if you gotta spend 4500 bucks on a series of parts and bolt ons to make your V6 go just as fast, if not a little tiny bit faster then my STOCK v8.. then why not save some cash and go with the v8? use that cash to get more power and torque out of the v8 and now your going faster for the same amount if not just a little bit more or less depending on parts and labor?
i can't see spending 20k on a motor that will make me MAYBE 700 hp...
how about spending 13 k on a 502 or bigger crate motor, and buy a 4 or 5 k on a SC, make like 1000 hp, take the other 2 k, take your friends to the titty bar and call it a day.
makes sense to me.. of course my numbers are just guesses cause i really don't have the time to go price hunting right now. but you get the point..
