well you cant just slap on a huge motor and call it a day, thats my point.... you NEED a built trans/rear end/fuel system in order to use that power. Thats where it all adds up.

yea those are definitely v8 prices, v6 prices are cheaper than your quotes.Originally posted by Superman09 View PostNot even close, pulling/swapping a motor or just doing the internals beats the hell out of an entire turbo kit. Honestly, people that have not done a turbo kit over look it, i even did before i started installing, had no idea it would be this much work.... No one thinks about all the work but heres a small list.... removal of all parts, exhaust system, ac for me, basically everything in the bay. start bolting pipes on, turbos on, air filters on turbos need to be fabbed to fit somewhere, relocate horns, PS lines, alt, extend alt wire, mount meth kit (tank, pump, controller) run lines, run wires, hook up relay/fuse, drill/tap for meth, oil feed, oil return, set up oil lines, mount scavenge pump, remove front bumper, intercooler install, cold side piping, fuel pump install, injector install, removal of many interior panels to mount guages, run/wire guages, mount lught for meth..... i could keep going.
As for the 20k, he was saying stroker motor, turbo kit, heads/cam, the works, so basically everything that covers and i bet you would hit 20k however i dont no the price differences between ls1 stuff and v6 stuff but a stroker kit and internals would be 3500 plus needing machine work to block, etc. talking 4k, turbo set up with guages, fuel, everything, 7500 ish to do it right, heads/cam,2-3k, fuel rails, lines, injectors to handle this new found power, a rear end and trans to hold this (4k+) It all adds up man.... however the v6 prices could differ but i would guess 20k to do what he said....------------------------------------------

ok so if you want to be generous then, 15k?
15k sounds like a lot more to me than buying a $1500 LT1 drivetrain and putting a 2k head/cam package on it getting you 450 rwhp. (add another 1k for exhaust, and another 1k for misc expenses... youre still at less than half the price)
Im not trying to be 'biased' here i have a LOT of respect for the 3.8. But I think there is a lot of anti-v8 bias as well. I see the gas mileage arguement all the time and i think its a myth. Driving my car hard in the city i still get 18.Last edited by JoeliusZ28; June 7th, 2007, 09:46 PM.-Joel

yea, the prices i was going off of are what i know... a lunati stroker kit for the ls1 is ~3500, then block work is 500 ish. a turbo kit will be around 7000 for any engine i'd assume to get up a running. a v6 may be able to save some by running a smaller turbo but not much. a 12 bolt is 2k, a built trans is 2k, auto you need a converter/cooler/temp guage, thats another 1k ish depending on if you want to cheap out on a converter and end up blowing threw it so you need to buy another later or get the good one from the start. a manual will need a clutch. Then fuel you'll need some bigger injectors, 60#'ers run $420 ish, a fuel pump kit at the bare minimum is couple hundred. Rails, lines, regulator and such will run you $500-1k. Heads and cam, ported patriot are just over a grand or AFRs are about $2400. Cam, and valvetrain is about $750-1k. Nickle and diming for parts, few grand, yes i'm not lying here... Dyno tune-$500-$700 depending where you go and most likely with this radical of a set up you'll go with a speed density tune which will probably run about $700.
I'd do a simple v8 swap if i were you.... The stroker engine, turbo kit, heads, cam, the works seems like it might be a little more than what your thinking....sigpic

that's the problem with LT1's though, too many people are half-assing them in the name of "cheap" powerOriginally posted by JoeliusZ28 View Post

I nice 3.8l car can be had for under $10k easily. And a lot less headaches, and more power than dropping a stock v8 in
all depends on your goals for your car.
but I am going to stop posting now as I see it is pointless to try and convince you guys.
If any v6 guys need help with your cars let me know, I am not going to waste my time trying to explain it to v8 guys I guess.------------------------------------------

stock LT1s get a bad rep because of the stock manifolds. An LT1 that cant breathe really isnt worth having.Originally posted by 96mikez28 View Postthat's the problem with LT1's though, too many people are half-assing them in the name of "cheap" power-Joel

Damn dude, i'm just stating the prices i know for V8s and what he mentioned. I even stated i knew the prices for v6s are different and i was just merely stating the v8 prices. In any case, the fact of the matter is, building anything to the hills with "the works" is going to be a rediculous price. An engine swap is going to be cheaper and easier than a turbo kit, and thats just a turbo kit, nothing else. If you want to build up the 6 and spray it, thats a different story but he didnt mention wanting to use spray.Originally posted by 97rs4life View PostI nice 3.8l car can be had for under $10k easily. none of us are arguing the potential of the v6. however what im seeing here is thisOriginally posted by 97rs4life View PostI nice 3.8l car can be had for under $10k easily. And a lot less headaches, and more power than dropping a stock v8 in

to make the same horsepower you need:
V8 swap:
-V8
-trans
-heads and cam
-headers
-custom exhaust
-harness and pcm (usually comes with a used engine/donor car)
-cooling system (also usually comes with a used engine/donor car)
V6:
-you have to pull the engine to build and stroke it (nearly the same work as an engine swap)
-add on the turbo kit (much more work than an engine swap)
-the same trans work to support the power.
thats not even comparing money. I know v6 parts are cheaper, but ultimately you need more to get the same power. You can do an engine swap in a day if you dont waste time. Heads and cam would be another day.
Ive been talking to jonny through his twin turbo install since he has started. It doesnt matter what engine you have, a turbo install is no fun, hence why it has taken him over half of a year. Obviously you can half ass anything. Jonny isnt and he knows his stuff. Im more or less biased against a turbo being practical based on the knowledge of his project.
IM not going to say it cant be done for less than 10k. I really dont know. but the less headaches part, I strongly disagree. a turbo is a major headache to install/tune/keep reliable. An engine swap youd be using GM parts made for the car and well tested. Theyre much more likely to go in and just "work."Last edited by JoeliusZ28; June 7th, 2007, 10:03 PM.-Joel

i was referring to the practicality of the project. I know full well turboed cars are very friendly driversOriginally posted by Superman09 View Posthaha, you will think its practical once i give you a ride

edit: a juiced 3.8 like Ty's and travis i would think is a practical way to make power. Thats a much easier and cheaper way to go out and stomp v8s.Last edited by JoeliusZ28; June 7th, 2007, 10:09 PM.-Joel

Don't use the mpg argument, a boosted, stroked, built v-6 is not going to have good mpg. Compared to a v-8 making the same power, it is quite possible the v-8 might even do better.
V-8 all the way!!
I agree with joel, a nitrous v-6 is probably your most practical cost/performance option.
But then again, my opinion is irrelevant because i own a v-8.

OK I realize ive been a huge contribution to the heat of this one, but we (including myself) need to step it down a notch here. I apologize if i have come off as overly forward with my opinion, i didnt mean to.
lets keep our hot rodding arguements friendly.-Joel
