  • K&N vs. paper air filters

I thought I'd give a paper air filter a try after having a K&N filter in the car after 5 years, cleaning and restoring it and having the "check engine light" come on for no reason at all and after a few days it goes out.

If you accidently over oil the filter the extra oil goes on the MAF and that's when the "check engine light" comes on, if you don't spray enough oil on then it won't do what it meant to do.

I think the K&N filter was great in the past when car didn't have all these sencors.

Whats everyone else"s thoughts on this?

As long as you don't over-oil the filter (which is easy to make sure you don't), it'll be perfectly fine.

My IROC was a MAF engine, and I had two K&Ns without any issue.

It doesn't really matter much. A K&N or any other similar filter might gain you 1-2 hp at the expense of not filtering as well as a paper filter. You can buy a lot of paper filters for the cost of one K&N.

K&Ns are a bit louder, or at least it seems like they are.

K&N filter will net you about 1-2 HP. And a great risk of allowing harmful particulate into your engine.

            ill keep my paper filters..

ive been reading in the past that the whole oiled filter thing is pretty much a hoax, a good paper filter will be fine.

paper, the amount of garbage let into the engine by K/N is not worth it.

when i got my SLP lid setup for my swap i ordered a K&N and when it came it was about 3/4" too small to fit in the basket. i just swapped it out for a paper WIX filter. i don't even put 4k miles a year on the car, i'll just toss in a new paper filter every summer and call it good.

When I bought my car it had a K&N. Multiple check engine lights later(oil on MAF), I switched to paper. Have run nothing but(paper) for 8 years now..

My main concern is that oil gets on the MAF

I have an un oiled K&N. No issues with it. Reminds me that I almost never check it..

I normally will use K&N on cars I'm going to keep for a while. Especially if the paper is expensive it pays off. Never had a sensor problem. That's a lot of oil to get to a sensor.
