Quick question about clear coats and sealers. Do you guys have a preference? Im looking to get Dupli-color's lacquer. any suggestions? I would rather use a spray can than use the gun..
    Thanks.

Honestly, you might get decent results with the spray can but IMHO it will still pale compared to if it were sprayed by gun.

It's too soft if you're going to be using it over large areas. Also I don't think it's UV-protected so it might yellow. Don't know how much of a problem that is over black paint but...will probably oxidize and fade.

Either way you'll have to wetsand the areas before you lay clear over them, and you'll be able to see the peeling lines under the new clear or wetsand through the color layer. Really there's no way around it besides sanding, new color, and new clear. I would suggest legitimate repaint through a gun. Did the rear quarter on my car where it was peeling years ago. Holding up pretty well but the color doesn't match.

i think for some areas im going to have to put down more color. but as far as seeing the clear coat lines i was going to tape up to my stripe-stickers. so it kind of camouflages that line..

Well, instead of fixing the paint issues i ignored them ( probably foolish..) But i spent a good 2 hours waxing the beast with some mothers caranuba cleaner wax. Obviously the areas with clean coat on the body still shined up really nice. and the areas where the clear coat is damaged it seemed to soak up a lot of wax before it smoothed over. anyway I brought some pictures along of course!

Before( i tried to get a nice picture of the swirl marks and scratches for comparison)

Looks good. Sucks about the clear coat, though - didn't realize it was all over until I saw the pics.

Thanks! But the clear coat is great everywhere but the front end, the tops of the front fender, hood, and the drivers rear quarter. I think the front end and front fenders will buff out with some compound.

Yeah - seems like the parts the sun beat on from overhead got the brunt of the clearcoat peel. Without actual clear coat, buffing would just burn through whatever clear is left and into the paint though, wouldn't it?

Youre totally right on it burning through the peeling clear coat. There are some spots that just look oxidized that i feel would buff out. the rest obviously needs to get resprayed.

not to bash but I honestly think you may have wasted a few hours there, that paint isn't worth saving but makes a good test bed for a newbie with a wheel.

I don't think it's a bash but for the areas where the clear is peeling, if you plan to repaint it's going to be harder for the painter to repaint with all that wax on it. Obviously degreasers and such help eat away the wax - especially something as soft as carnauba wax, but none the less...

I dont think he is planning on painting the car anytime soon so he should be alright. But yes when you do get to painting the car your going to need all of that to come off. Also I would recommend just paint the whole car not just spot painting. In the end it might even be cheaper then just trying to get the fenders, hood, quarter, etc painted.
