  • Third Gen Exhaust Systems

Hey all. I bought an Fbody and am leaning towards working on the exhaust first.

What do you recommend for parts? A whole system? Or headers + y-pipe + muffler separately?

I have a hole below the passenger seat and will be patching it soon but eventually I would like to upgrade completely.

Car is a 1988 GTA with 305/700r4 combo.

If they started producing them again, MAC mid lengths and y-pipe are supposed to be nice. I couldn't find a new set in the entire US when I was searching. Even got ahold of someone at MAC, they didn't have a set date when they would be back in stock as they cycle production based on demand.

I went with Hooker 2055 Ceramic, Magnaflow 3" replacement cat, and Hooker Aerochamber catback. Not a fan of Flowmaster setups on these cars.

I was also thinking of an exhaust cutout. I've heard/read good things about Bandlanz electric cutouts. Is the cutout usually a post y-pipe fit?

I have headman shorties, matching 2.75 Y pipe, custom test pipe to 3"magna flow cat back.

Its kinda quiet at idle and sounds good at higher RPM but isn't quite the "loud' muscle car sound that one would expect.

I'll probably do a cutout here soon.

Alrighty, I've been doing some research. Here's what I have:

Hooker 2055 Super Competition Headers with Y-pipe at 3.00 inches.
Hooker 16820 Cat Back 3.00 inch pipe from Cat.

I am having trouble locating a usable Catalytic convertor that fits the bill for a 3.00 inch inlet and 3.00 inch outlet. I couldn't find a Magnaflow Direct fit that would fit with the above components.

Any advice or a Cat that would go right in there?

Yeah, I hate to say it, but remove is a way to consider. I have the older edlbrock shorty headers and 3" y-pipe. I bought them a very long time ago. I pulled them out to re-paint last summer... wow are these built to restrict. I would not recommend them again, but at the time they were the only ones affordable. I would recommend saving and getting a coated (inside and out) or stainless set. Especially the headers. Y would be a bonus. They just get so corroded. Looking inside my headers it looks like 60 grit sandpaper. Can't imagine that will work well for flow either. They just get so hot they are prone to this. These are a big investment that will be with the car for life. Get the good ones. I would be less concerned with the cat-back (unless you are going stainless there too). These you can buy and sell all day. Until you get the sound you want. Most flow pretty well. I honestly would wait on the cutout. I have considered it with mine, but I would want it wire it in automatically to RPM. Not too hard to do. BUT, get the system right before you bother with adding this complexity. I don't think you really benefit at all from it (other than cool points) unless you race. 90% of your use will be in the standard system use. Focus money and research on the headers. Go back from there. Maybe even consider 4" pipe and not do the cutout at all.

                  Good luck.

I have the magniflow 3" catback. Good sound. The sound really depends on your cam as well.

I think I found some Magnaflow Cats with 3'' ins and 3'' outs. However, what length will I need it to be to fit for the y-pipe and aerochamber mentioned above? I found 12'', 16'', and 16.125"(AIR) Magnaflow Cats.

That shows up as a replacement instead of a 3" in/out cat. Their website doesnt specify if it is stock 2.25" or the 3".

But it does, just not directly. 85-89 cars with F code engines had 3" y pipe.
