  • Exhaust Identification Help

Well who would have guessed, I am having more problems with this car of mine.
I have posted this over at ls1lt1 because I cant view this forum during the day on my phone and I am tired of fighting with it.
I purchased this car this past summer. Drove it a few weeks and started to have problems with it. So I parked it and decided since I had to tear into it I would do some upgrades while I was in to it. Headers are tops on the list. I had decided to go with med length headers so I could utilize the rest of the exhaust system on the car. (which is a 94 z 28) So tonight I got to drop the crossover and what I guess is supposed to be the Y pipe. Right away I noticed there are to many o2 sensors. So I am guessing this is a later production exhaust system. Heres a pic.

If anyone can tell me what year exhaust this is it would help me Identify what header system I will need to order.
From what I understand a 94 was a single cat system and should only have o2 's in front of the cats. What I dont know is what the header with Y pipe will hook up like. Will it work with this exhaust? Im kinda screwed on this till I can figure this out.
As always, any help or info would be much appreciated.

So, if anyone knows what this exhaust is from, year wise please let me know. I am dead in the water till I figure this out.

Dont mind Larry he's been drinking Someone either swapped your car to a 96-97 exhaust (cat monitor sensors would have been left disconnected), or you have a california emissions car, which came all years equipped with this setup.

edit: and why do you care about what works with that y-pipe? Throw it in the garbage and get some longtubes on there!

Yup, 96-97 setup there. I haven't heard much about the cali setup. Honestly, I haven't seen a pre-96 PCM calibration that has post cat monitoring in the file.

Are you looking to keep emissions? Lowering the car?

Im with joel, if you're going to go through the trouble then do long tubes! The gains of mids flowing through a stock y-pipe are not worth the bloody knuckles and frustration.

Joe, if the car isn't lowered then go with the long tubes.

My IROC 'vert couldn't do the long tubes because of fitment (special bracing with convertibles) and the fact I went to 5 speed manual. On the other hand, my 98 Z28 rubs on bad driveways with an LT1 Prokit and BBK longtubes. I do have a hybrid setup though

Im lowered 1.25" with longtubes and i have no trouble with scraping. Even when i think im about to it usually doesnt. but then again the car isnt a DD if i know there might be a speed bump i take a different car

Well, I hope you are all happy with yourselves!!!
I purchased a set of long tubes today with a Y pipe. Ill just put the stock junk in the attic I case I ever need it. I was able to find a set of stainless headers and orY with gaskets and bolts for 349.00 plus tax free shipping. I just need to extend the wires on my o2's.
Whats the worst that can happen? I end up having to put duals on it? I could live with that.

Good. If you purchased anything other than LTs, I probably would of knocked on your door, smacked you in the face..jk..good purchase though, its long tubes or go home.

                    Nice!

Assuming you got the ebay ones. Those are going to require some "massaging" but they'll be nice once its done.

                      Good man!

I'm glad we could help you spend your money. Now keep in mind, when you're frustrated with the install and want to blame us, it would have been just as much of a pain in the arse with mids. The worst part will be getting the old ones off without breaking any bolts off in the heads. Soak those babies in PB Blaster for a couple days before you start!

true that, mids are probably more of a PITA depending on the header. Ive removed some shorties that were FAR worse than stock manifolds.

oh fml! massaging? I really hope you just mean adjusting, I cant take too much more. I have been fighting with one effing bolt for the past 3 hours and I am sorry to say it won. The drivers side 2nd to last bolt in the exhaust manifold is so rusted that I cant find anything to fit the thing. Ive gone all the way down to an 11 mm socket. That just wont go on and a 12 slips, 1/2 inch doesnt even grab. There isnt enough room to drill it or cut it. cant get my welder in there to weld a nut on it. I dont know what to try next.
Jezuz I havent been this frustrated since high school.
My only other thought, is to use an open end wrench on the head bolts on the outside, and to let the bolts jack up the head as they back out when they hit the manifold.

Edit: that wont work either I wont be able to get to the bolts behind the pipe flange.
