I dont see it like that. he wants to know what he has so he knows whether or not he wants to go bigger or smaller with whatever he buys. Its not necessary to know but definitely would give you a better idea considering driving a cam is better than just watching a youtube video and guessing.

do not speak to me like i am some sort of kid as you are being 19 and all, i do not appreciate it one bit. I created this post for advise on to which cam i may have. i am not worried about the valve springs if you can not read what i have posted in the begining. I am tring to figure out what cam may have since i bought the car with the cam already in it at a dealer. to whom the previous owner sold it to, thus after selling the trans am he moved to caliornia. the dealer would not release any info on him to me at all due to privacy acts.

you can measure valve lift with a dial indicator on the rocker directly above the valve tip.
the blue lines on 918's sometimes wash and appear to be grey

would you do that just by turning the motor over? from the rockers lowest point to the rockers highest point to get the lift measurement?

yes. has to be directly over the valve tip though if you do it on the rocker. you could also put the dial indicator on the spring retainer
the problem is that the magnet wont attach to anything so a clamp on unit would work better

will any dial indicator be fine for this or should it be a good higher end one?

You could pay the S.O.S. for a title search and get the name of the previous owner that way.

The dial indicator method will get you close on lift but not exact unless you have absolutley no bleed down on the lifter.
