Steering shaft detached.

Today I was pulling away from a 4 way stop and I feel a pop in the steering wheel and there goes my steering car makes a turn for ther ight. I manage to get it stopped before I hit the ditch. Thank god I was not on the highway or going at any real rate of speed.
The steering shaft cam detached from the steering rack. I get it towed home jack it up get things adjusted and put back on. Not 100% if it is correct.
I have two issues.
One I have a slight pop when turning left just before the wheel its straight.
Two – Airbag light is now on. Sticker on steering shaft says not to turn wheel while shaft is not connected. The sticker says see owner’smanual. I don’t have one. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is that just for the slight pop or the airbag also? How hard is it to fix?

Probably both. The first pop was probably the band breaking (air bag usually goes off) the like light is on cause the band is broke.

I am pretty sure the pop was the shaft coming detached from the rack. I lost all steering at that point.

Wow. Thats a little scary. Why did this happen? Was there some kind of material failure?

No material failure. I am not sure why, the car had recently been to the "shop" for a engine rebuild maybe it did not get put together properly? I dont know.

This exact same thing happened to me on the highway. Unfortunately the car did not survive.

No bolt in the rack pinch? Those are a pain to get to compress so that's odd. I usually don't even try to compress the shaft just pull it as the kmember is coming down

probably a failed zip tie, since the "shop" loved to use those so much

Yes there was a bolt in place. it was even tight. Maybe not tight enough? That is why I am not sure if I have it on right. I am going to get a new column tomorrow. So I hope that it works out.

Anything I need to change when putting in the new column?

Was it the correct bolt?

The bolt didn't even have to be tight. It is in a half moon slot. If the correct bolt was in it won't slide off

Well Then It must have been the wrong bolt anyone know where I can get the correct bolt?

This is the bolt that is in it the head is 11mm. If anyone has a spare of the correct bolt please let me know I would like to insure I have a correct bolt. I need to know that this is not going to come apart again.
