Asking this for my Dad. Last year he bought a '70 Nova SS396. When we got the car, it had dexcool in it. We have since flushed it and it looked fine but some of his friends have been telling him he shouldn't have dexcool in it. Personally, I think its fine. The jury says ... ?

I've heard that on older engines the DexCool doesn't like certain gasket material and can cause problems. If that's the case, Peak green antifreeze is the better choice. I run DexCool in my Firebird with no problems.sigpic

What do his friends mean when they say "the car shouldn't have dexcool"? Gm started using dexcool in 1995, prior to this all vehicle has green coolant.
I have dexcool in my chevelle and every vehicle we assemble in which it has a new cooling system is filled with long life coolant.

This engine was rebuilt less than 10 years ago by the previous owner. He was a performance junky with the wallet to pay for it, and everything was done right. It is hydraulic roller converted and runs on 93 octane. Seems doubtful to me he would screw up a simple detail like coolant. We really havent found a single thing on this car that was half-assed or done wrong yet. Just things that were nearing the need for routine maintenance.Last edited by JoeliusZ28; September 18th, 2012, 09:15 PM.-Joel

dex cool eats plastic, also deteriorates rubber. I've seen a few leaky LS radiators from that junk. I've always ran the green stuff, in my truck I have the CAT ELC "extended life coolant" my camaro just has water in it

should be fine, if it was built as meticulously as you noted then i see no issue with running it. just dont mix dexcool with regular stuff.91 Trans am, 305, Lt1 cam, 24lb injectors, headers, SLP LM2, SW chassis, massive panhard, lowered, modded TPI, Tuned, 4.10s, Lincoln locked

DexCool doesn't like some older gaskets, yes, it's PH related form what I hear.
DexCool is fine when properly maintained. I do run the standard green antifreeze after every flush though

if i may voice my opinion, coolant is coolant, long life stuff is just advertisement. yes it may last longer but i wouldnt want to really find out how much longer and neglect my cooling system. use dexcool or regular ethylene glycol just dont make sure to mix them, and keep them maintained and youll be fine either way.91 Trans am, 305, Lt1 cam, 24lb injectors, headers, SLP LM2, SW chassis, massive panhard, lowered, modded TPI, Tuned, 4.10s, Lincoln locked
