i have been wondering the same questions, so i asked my engine builder and he said absolutely DON'T use a break in additive/oil. he builds race motors on a regular base, with every motor he builds he includes a case of Brad Penn(race oil with alot of zink) and one of the guys he built it for used some other breaking in oil and called him him freaking out because he drove it for a few miles and the thing was smoking, they told him they put that other oil in there.. he yelled at them and told them to put the Brad Penn in it now... so they did and right after they did(a few miles) the rings sealed and was good to go.. so i guess my advise is dont use anything special(as in break in oil) just use a basic oil, or preferably something with alot of zink(penn ect.) also found alot of good information on this site: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm hope any of this helps.

Getting 15 different answers is what its like asking for advice on the internet in a nutshell. Do what James said and call your builder. If it goes kaboom and you followed all of his instructions then it is back on him. I can guarantee that if it blows up and you tell him you put $2/quart walmart oil in it he will blame that. Not saying its the cause, but thats what it will fall back to.Originally posted by Formula Z View Postman i cant get a straight answer on this lol. ill just return the lucas break in oil and the rotella and get the cheapest 30w there is and change numerous times at first. thanks everyone
Same thing goes with breaking the new engine in and seating the rings. Ask for your builder's advice and stick to that.

builder says anything as long as its 30w and not synthetic. lol but i didnt clarify if thats 5w30 or straight 30w. he says my rotella will do just fine as long as its 30w, but i think its 15w40 so it wont work if thats what it issigpic

In the end the tuner/builder knows best. My new build was finished Wednesday at noon and it was driven around for a bit and pretty much broken in on the dyno. Tuning was complete around 5:30 then some street tuning was done. Castrol 10w40 was recommended. Oil changes at 500, 2000, 3500, and 6000 miles then synthetic can be used. Car feels stronger and stronger everyday.

modern style rings normally wont glaze... im one of those that dont rod on it to break them in... thats a bad idea... i drive easy for a few hundred miles on fossil oil than switch to synthetic.1997 Camaro SS convertible #594-Gone but never forgotten

Heres my input on break in. Put a 10w-30 in there. Fire it up. Rev to 2000 and hold it there until it reaches OT. Once it gets there, hold it for another 5 minutes. Drive it around, no WOT but do some decent 75% pulls and then some low RPM crusing. Change the oil and get it tuned. What rings did you put in it?2015 Silverado

I've heard holding one steady rpm is not good fro break in and seating the rings. As mentioned everyone will have a different opinion on this so just do what the builder/tuner say and you'll be fine.Doing less with more
