i just changed my oil about a week ago, now the sensor on the pan is leaking so i went to swap that out and as expected got a little oil everywhere but anyways it was black like it hated been changed in years. didnt smell like gas nor was it shiny as if it had gas or coolant in it just black. this cant be good can it

ive found that a 160 degree thermo can make a car run too rich, is that what youve got? The PCM will be referencing the warm-up AFR tables constantly. My oil got dirty quick with that also.
300 miles and black oil is normal, I thought. Mine was black when I changed it at 250.
For break in miles, I'd agree with you.
But full synthetic on a broken in motor?
My suspicions are running in line with Joel's...

a 160 tstat is a good idea if your computer is programmed for it - but with the stock AFR tables, the PCM never thinks it reaches operating temperature, and thus the AFR will never quite hit the optimum mixture. 160 is "close" to warmed up, so it will only run somewhat rich - its not extreme or dangerous but it will filth the oil up quicker. The PCM gradually leans the mixture out the warmer the coolant readings get.
i have a stock thermostat but this is all good info. i just dont have the money for a rebuild quite yet so i was hoping i wasnt seeing early signs of catostrophic failure
You have an old dirty motor and the new SM rated oils are very good at cleaning so you are probably just seeing the oil do it's job. I would not worry about it. New pennzoil syn is some of the best out there now for the money. If an oil is not getting dirty it is not doing its job I would think.
