5.3 wont turn over Help!

Its not a weak click. I am how to turn the crank tonight to double check to see if it is free. I was free when I installed the stall and tranny to the engine.

Also make sure the battery connections are clean and tight. Just covering all the bases. Check the easy stuff first. I had a brand new starter that was completely nonfunctional right out of the box, when I still had my lt1. Its not impossible. But if its clunking it sounds like its trying.

Upgraded ground wire check. Good starter after bench check. Still no start. Sounds like its trying to engage the flex plate but not turning over. Do these starters have to be shimmed?

Ok I tried again and tried jumping it with my truck. Same thing. Sounds like it is slamming into the flex plate Is there any differences in teeth between starters? I am at a lose!

So I tried my buddies Fbody starter and it turned over. Anyone have a Fbody starter they want to sell or trade?

what starter were you using before?

i picked up a starter from a '06 silverado with a 6.0l for $60 from the local junk yard and am using that. it has the two bolt design which is less likely to break off.

You should be able to look at them side by side and see what the difference is and why rhe 5.3 starter isnt working.

just won't stay running, or shuts off after a couple seconds?

mine was shutting off after 2-3 seconds and it was because we hadn't flashed my ECU yet.
