    • yeah, 98 wont fit it uses a series of clips to attach to the cluster, rather than the 5 screws. From what I have been able to find 97 is a stand alone year. 98 stuff wont work even though it fits physically the wiring and values are all different.

Got my Pcm back today, still have a check engine light due to the knock sensor, so I am contemplating upgrading to the 99 sensors since I have to be in there anyways. The $64.00 question is where do I get the harness from? steeler? Id like to do the whole thing and be done with it. same time, over.

It was nice not having any warning lights on, on the dashboard while it lasted. As soon as I put my foot in it, "bling" the light came on. I removed the seatbelt light while I was in there, so no more dealing with that.

          • I went a couple more rounds with the exhaust system after work today. Its much better, only hits from the line, and no where near as bad as it was. So, I thought, I should stop in @ Advance and have them scan it quick, make sure there arent any extra codes. So all is good, the same knock sensor and o2 codes as before, So I have him clear the codes. I figure Ill see how long it takes before the light comes back on. Drove around for a hour, no light. Im starting to think , wow, the rattling exhaust was my problem the whole time! whooo hooo! .......
Nope. Stupid bulb burned out! lol! I still have to swap out the knock sensors..

            • They cleared the codes for you?!

Around here they will not, they all say it's against the law. Usually not a problem for me unless I work or VW or Audi, then I have to drive out to a friends house.

              • Against the law? Wow. Thats just nuts, but not really surprising. How can you diagnose a repair without clearing the code to see of the repair worked? No one said things had to make sense I guess.

                  VAGCOMs are cheap...

It's also one thing that made me a fan of the brand. Pretty cool to be able to tell what voltage a window regulator is getting and being able to predict when it will fail. Lots of information available through the ECU. Of course this is before it was common in most cars.

                      • I think tomorrow will be knock sensor day. Depending on the severity of the impending hang over, of course.

                          • Forgot all about this thread.
I had one issue changing the knock sensors. One bolt in the intake manifold snapped off due to rust. Turned a hour job into a 4 hour time suck. Had to find a bolt to replace the broken one.
All is well. No check engine light. Runs great.

                            • I got her back from the paint shop today. I had the rear quarters straightened and painted, and the lower portion of the nose. She is resting comfortably under a new cover in the driveway.

                              • I spent the better part of today onder the Camaro today. I finally decided to swap out the transmission tail cone with the rebuilt one I bought from Richard @ Detroit gearbox. And as an added bonus I decided to go a couple more rounds with the finicky exhaust system.
The trans portion of this project was strictly a r&r, job no sweat . The exhaust was a major battle. I cut the stinger off the Y pipe and gave it a bit of an up angle and rewelded it to the rest of the Y.
This piece used to sit on top of the trans tunnel brace and vibrate the whole car. At certain rpms the entire car would resonate. This up angle gave me just enough clearance to get things off the brace.
Next I cut off the hanger bracket and rewelded it on in the correct location and reinstalled the hanger that mounts to the tail shaft of the trans. I ended up having to cut an inch off of the Y pipe to get the tips straight and even under the bumper. No more leaks, no more vibrations, no more rattling. It's a lot quieter in the lower rpm ranges now without all the resonance. A day well spent.
