  • stepping up to the LS2.... ditching the LS1

most everyone knows about my issues with the shop who put together my LS1 shortblock last winter with him putting 4 rods in backwards. Well if you didnt, basically spun two bearings, ruined two rods, and the crank. the builder blamed a failed oil pump as the culprit and wants another $453 to fix his mistakes. Im not doing it. I will call it a loss first.

so larry (1badair) offered me a 6.0 LS2 shortblock that i guess used to belong to the infamous dr. phil. seems it came out of his 06 vette w 76k on it. im going to basically bolt my 806 heads and LS6 intake to it for the time being while i search again for a top end, whether it be some 243 LS6 heads or wait and get some 215 afrs or LS3 top end. I know my stock heads are not going to do it any favors and will most likely lose power, at least in the top end. im hoping my big cam, LTs, 3.73s and 3500 stall will keep me happy. but i will get to enjoy my firebird for the summer and thats what matters to me right now.

i will have to purchase a conversion module from lingenfelter due to the 58x reluctor wheel on the ls2 crank. that seems easier then trying to swap reluctor wheels.

my LS1 shortblock is already spoken for and will be rebuilt and installed into a 3rd gen camaro as far as i know and hope.

if you have any comments, suggestions, ideas, insight, or concerns, please let me know. i am wondering where i will lose my hp/tq, will it be significant, gas mileage affects, and so on.

    thanks

            livernois ported 243's (were bare)
            cut/installed/lapped sodium valves(dave Harmon)
I am taking the Extreme springs off and putting a new set of golds on them. My new heads came with golds and since the 243's only have around 3000miles(total) i am gonna swap them.

sounds like an awesome deal but yeah thats a little rich for me at the moment. maybe once i get this together and recoop some cash, maybe if they are still available this summer, i can pick em up. wifey isnt too happy with me and my firebird at the moment. im basically out almost $1800 from this ls1 failing. she can and has named numerous things that she would rather do with the money

Sounds like your heading in the right direction.

Only thing im wondering about is re using your old cam.

Gen 3 setups pickup the cam signal from the rear of the cam through a hole in the top of the block just behind the valley cover. The ls2 is a gen 4 setup, and gets its cam sensor signal from a sensor in the front cover. Which IIRC uses a different sprocket that wont go on gen 3 cams. So in all reality, I dont think you can re use your old cam.

                  Hopefully im wrong/missing something!

After reading lings site and talking to Phil the 05 1x gear isn't what you need. I have a 4 window 3 bolt gear I will include . Has about a hour of run time. It was put in an engine that was built for a car I was working on. After fixing vats issue and ignition switch issues I found the cam gear to be wrong.

I thought the cams had a different bolt pattern?

You will deff still need the harness though, its extends the cam sensor plug from the back of the block to the front, the wires just wont reach on an ls1 harness.
