      Here is some basic information about the engines and some applications where they can be found

      5.3L

      ***Generation III***

      The Vortec 5300, or LM7/LM4/L59/L33, is a V8 truck engine. It is a stroked (by 9 mm) version of the Vortec 4800 and replaced the 5700 L31. L59 denoted a flexible fuel version, while the LM7 was the standard version of the engine.

      Power output is 285-295 hp (213-220 kW) and torque is 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) to 335 lb·ft (454 N·m). Displacement is 5.3 L (5328 cc (325 cu in)) from 96.01 mm bore and 92.00 mm stroke. Vortec 5300s are built in St. Catharines, Ontario, Romulus, Michigan, and Silao, Mexico.


      LM7
      The LM7 Vortec 5300 was introduced in 1999, and can be considered the "garden variety" version of the Generation III 5.3 liter V8's.

      LM7 applications:

      2002-2005 Cadillac Escalade 2WD
      2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche
      2003-2007 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana
      1999-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
      1999-2007 GMC Sierra 1500
      1999-2006 Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL
      1999-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon

      LM4
      The LM4 was an aluminum block version of the LM7, and had a short production life. It should not be confused with the L33.

      LM4 applications:

      2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT
      2004 GMC Envoy XL
      2004 Chevrolet SSR

      L33
      The L33 was an aluminum block version of the LM7, and was referred to as the Vortec 5300 HO in marketing materials. Power increased by 15 hp (11 kW), to 310 hp (230 kW), over the LM7, and torque was unchanged. It was only available on extended cab 4WD pickup trucks.

      L33 applications:

      2005-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD
      2005-2007 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD

      L59
      The L59 Vortec 5300 was introduced in 2002, and was a flexible fuel version of the LM7. Power and torque ratings matched that of the LM7.

      L59 applications:

      2002-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
      2002-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon
      2002-2006 Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL
      2002-2007 GMC Sierra 1500



      6.0L

      ***Generation III***

      LQ4
      The Vortec 6000, or LQ4, is a V8 truck engine. It is a bored version of the Vortec 5300. Displacement is 6.0 L (≈366 cu in) from 101.6 mm bore and 92 mm stroke. It is an iron/aluminum (2000 model year engines had cast iron heads) design and produces 300 horsepower (220 kW) to 325 horsepower (242 kW) and 360 lb·ft (488 N·m) to 370 lb·ft (502 N·m). LQ4s are built in Romulus, Michigan and Silao, Mexico.

      LQ4 applications:

      Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana
      Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Pickup, 3500 Pickup, Crew Cab, and Chassis Cab/GMC Sierra 2500 HD Pickup and Crew Cab, C3, Denali, and 3500 Pickup and Chassis Cab, 1500HD Crew Cab

      LQ9
      The Vortec HO 6000 or VortecMAX is a special high-output version of the Vortec 6000 V8 truck engine originally designed for Cadillac. This engine was introduced in other truck lines as VortecMAX for 2006. It features high-compression (10:1) flat-top pistons for an extra 10 hp (7.5 kW) and 10 ft·lbf (14 N·m), bringing output to 345 hp (257 kW) and 380 ft·lb (515 N·m). LQ9s are built only in Romulus, Michigan. GM also listed it as based on LS architecture.[1]

          Thanks for all the info Shawn, it has really been very helpful. The website you posted has some really good deals on the 5.3 & 6.0 engines. I also looked on the forum that AJ posted from TGO and I am have a better understanding of the costs associated with a LS1 swap. I really don't think I can afford the LS1 swap at this time but the truck engine seems more feasible. The TGO forum also made me just want to stay with my origional block & go 383 based on the power goals that I have, although, these truck engines are very appealing as well. I will do some more home work on the prices of doing the 5.3, and 6.0 swap, compared to keeping my origional block and strokinh it to 383.

            Why waste your time with a 5.3 when you can get an LQ4 for $400-ish more and make 100hp more with the same mods...

              You are right Mike, I am going to be looking more into it within the next two weeks, I saw a few 6.0 for the same price as the 5.3.

                If you dont need the HP, 400 dollars buys a lot of mods/accessories.

                      Sounded... Doesnt sound as bad ass now that the extra cubes of the 6.0 ate up the cam. Guess were gonna have to go bigger in the cam dept now, lol.

                        You can go cam only 5.3 or 6.0 and be able to obtain that 350 rwhp pretty easily. Not only will it make the power you want but, it will be more reliable and wont leak oil like EVERY single sbc does.

                              Thanks for posting this AJ, I looked at the numbers and I would just but a complete 6.0 with wiring harness, accessories and all becasue I woudn't know how to piece a bare block together. Buy a 4l60E, but looking at spencers build it looks like the swap wouldn't just go right into my third gen. I would also have to pay for labor as well. I am going to talk to my mechanic about going 6.0 to see if it is a feasible project financially for me.

                                Actually, the 6.0 can and will just bolt right in. Get adapter plates from ebay (1" setback plates 3/8" thick) They allow you to bolt your existing engine mounts to the LS block. Oh for $40...

                                For exhaust you can use the stock manifolds from an Fbody. Im sure there are plenty of members here with some manifolds laying around.
                                Buy the Fbody accessories (Balancer, waterpump, ETC)
