Thanks! But, no no no.... lol. This polish should last me a while. I figure I have about 15 hours total into the project including disassembly and reinstall. And about $40 worth of new stainless steel hardware for the system.

      • Rear End Revival: Day 1

I tore down the rear end today. I got all the wires, brake lines, rotors, calipers, sway bar and panhard bar off and ready for paint.

I then popped off the differential cover and drained the fluid - pretty black, but no metal

I've been searching LS1tech trying to figure out what differential I have and it sounds like I have the LSD...

        Basically,

I turn the yolk, both rotors spin same direction
I turn one rotor, the other spins the opposite direction - the yolk doesn't move

Can anyone verify that I have the LSD?

My next question is the fluid...

How much do I need to put back in? I bought 2 quarts of Royal Purple Synthetic and a friction modifier additive... Do I need this? and how much?

Should I attempt the clean the inside of the differential to get the old fluid out? Some people on tech said to use brakleen... opinions?

I sandblaster the differential cover to get the rust off, and in doing so, the magnet fell off. It appears to have been glued/epoxied on from the factory. I'm sure the engineers did this for a reason - anyone know what product I can use the reattach it? I don't feel safe with just trusting magnetics...

        What I started with...

        What I ended with tonight...

Can someone please tell me what differential I have?

        • I think you can clean it out with brakleen, but there are more people here who would know better than me, looking good man

          • Why wouldn't you have an LSD? All 4th gens came with them. You might be thinking of a Torsen vs an Eaton differential? If so, take a look inside the diff, if there are gears in there it is a Torsen, clutch packs are Eaton. From the pics you posted I can't really inside the diff, but looks like an Eaton case. But don't quote me on that, I don't work for Torque

Edit: I think you just fill it through the fill hole until it comes out just like the t56

              • All ls cars had LSD. Your looks to be a torsen to me, I know the 98s had auburn diffs. Brake cleaner works well to clean it all out.

                • Yep all 4th gen V8 cars came with some form of a limited slip diff. 98s had the auburn clutch style and somewhere after that, they started switching to the torsen style, they dont really wear out, they just kinda break and stop being an lsd. You do not need the limited slip additive in the Torsen setup, but it doesnt hurt it any.

                    Thats how I did mine.

I used gorilla glue to hold the magnet on, and black silicone around all the edges of the magnet.

Have your gears ever been changed? Was there ANY metal shavings on the magnet?

Gears are stock 3.42s and zero metal shavings on the magnet or in the pan.

Are you going to do a gear swap? I have some used 3.73 gears you can have if needed.

Going to stick with the stock 3.42s for right now, but thanks!
