  • Intake doesnt look bad. Can't you rent a leak down gauge from autozone?

      • Leakdown tester isnt listed under "loan a tool", just compression tester

        • what year motor is it? we had a truck using oil and it was the baffles in the valve cover . replaced the valve cover and didnt consume oil. i think it was using atleast a qt every 1500 miles the intake had alot of oik in it we had to take it off to clean it all out.

          • Supposedly 02 or 03, the second time I did valve seals the baffle was actually just laying on top of the rocker arms all dented and smashed to hell by them. I got it strightened out, had it welded back on and ran a bead of black rtv around it when I was done. So the baffle in the driver cover is better than new. But the pass cover doesnt have one. It just has that black plastic thing....what exactly does that do?

            • not sure on the black plastic on the passenger side cover. but sure sounds like the drivers cover is not how it should be even if you welded it. if it is an 03 there is a gm bul. pip4429s for oil consumption. it says the cause could be the baffle on the valve cover plugged in the drain holes... or could have over aggressive lifters. i have access to the bull. but no way to send it to you. if it were me with what you have already found on the drivers valve cover i would replace it and clean out the oil in the intake and drive it. it is a cheaper experiment than others.

              • you definately need to look into the rings asap... The more I think about it, the more I say that that is just too much oil to be coming from any other source. I would also think that since you are losing that much oil, something should show up with a leakdown test. I would doubt that just the oil control rings failed.

do at the very least and compression check and get back to us. No use talking about other issues like PCV or baffles when we have one strong lead that could be confirmed or denied by a few simple tests

Ive done alot of reading on the drivers side cover. and its exactly as it should be. Ive read the bulletin, I have access to gmglobalconnect.

Only thing im unsure of is the passenger cover, what does that hose go to or do? Goes to the TB, but seams to go no where at that point, just stops?

Are the black plastic peices some kind of check valve or baffle?

Ive been screwing with this for almost a year now, and the only things coming to mind are rings and something with that passenger side cover.....

If I run a catch can, I capture the oil that would normally end up in the intake right? So wouldnt I just be emptying the catch can every thousand miles or so when I usually add oil?

                  • Well the cheapest route you could go is replace the valve covers. You'll find out very shortly if it worked or not.

                    • What is considered acceptable for a leakdown test on an LS motor? Going to get a leakdown tester right now.

                        • Thanks..............

I was looking for an actual experienced person to answer that. Remember, anyone can be an expert on the internet.....

The car craft article I read showed 8 to 12 being acceptable for street cars, 20% is time for a rebuild.
