noisy lifters.

Since I may be ripping the top front off my engine shortly I thought I might kill 2 stones with one bird.
When my engine is cold my lifters are loud. They rattle quite bad until the engine is warm. One in particular rattles pretty bad when I have to drive before it is warm. Once the engine is warm all is quiet. So. Replace them with new ones? or put in a higher pressure oil pump? The oil pressure is 20 psi when warm at idle in gear, 40 when cold.
To my thinking,I have higher oil pressure when its cold, shouldnt the lifter be pressurised even more when cold? or is the slightly thicker oil not getting into a plugged up lifter? Once the oil thins out from warming up then it gets in and quiets things down? Just my thoughts.

what grade or oil do you run? 5w30 10w30 ?

maybe try a thinner oil on cold start ups, helps with getting oil to the top of the engine faster

I would like to at least get rid of the one lifter that really hammers when its cold. That one bothers me like nails on a chalkboard. Ill try the oil first.

Anyone know where the check valve is in the oil system of an lt1. Filter or oil pump?

Also someone correct me if im wrong, but isnt the first number of oil related to cold start viscosity? The factory recommended oil is 5w-30 so 10w-30 when cold might be too thick. I personally run 0w-40.

Thanks Joel I will be changing to 5w soon as I get this confounded ignition problem sorted out, It may help The mechanic at work I have been talking with doesnt like the fact that they are bleeding down overnight. It may be a filter issue or it could be a oil pump issue. Either way I will have all winter to figure it out I guess.

Yes Joel you are correct. thinner oil allows it to lube everything quicker on the colder start ups, then as the oil temp comes up the viscosity thickens.

Have you tried to adjust the rocker arms? go to shbox.com there is a valve lash procedure there. Could be nothing to do with oil pressure.

Since I had to park it for the opti,I decided to just swap the lifters out while it was parked.

Hey zeeman, just curious....have you changed out your lifters yet and if so, did it make any difference as far as noise on cold starts?
