  • Camshaft - keep it or scrap it? Tuning tips to try?

I think my Dutch heritage got the best of me when I heard "I have a low miles LT1 cam you can have."

    Engine specs:
    355 4 bolt hydraulic roller
    10.5:1

    Heads:
    Edelbrock 80659 - 2.02/1.60 with .010 Mill (165cc 232/175 cfm)
Lunati 74818K5 valve spring kit (+.100 valves, 130# seat at 1.800")
Comp Cam High Energy 1.5 roller rockers

    Intake:
    Accel Superram baseplate
    SLP runners
    Matched plenum
Stock TB with SLP air foil

    Exhaust:
Hooker 2055's Ceramic with AIR tubes
Magnaflow 3" cat (not on the car)
Hooker 16823 catback (not on the car)

    Current Cam:
    Comp Cams custom grind.
    LT1 3196B/3120B HR111 E C8553
    Installed dot to dot.

    Looking at Comp's Lobe catalog:
    3196 Intake
    Duration - 288
    Duration @ .050 - 236
    Duration @ .200 - 162
    Lift -.585

    3120 Exhaust
    Duration - 304
    Duration @ .050 - 244
    Duration @ .200 - 161
    Lift -.575

The car starts up just fine, when it's cold I might have to fire it up two or three times then it will stay running. Haven't played with the cold start delay yet. I can't get the AEM wideband to read at idle ("---") and smells rich, the smell is to be expected with 74* of overlap but I thought I'd see something measurable on the o2. 32* of timing at idle, idle set to 900 RPM at operating temp. 8 inHg at idle.

Worth spending the cash to put the car on the dyno for a tune? Or should I pull out the cam while I have the front bumper off the car?

What's your base timing set at? What ECM are you running?

Can you data log it with anything? I would be able to help more if you could datalog the engine while it is running. The AEM wideband is not going to tell you anything at idle, even on my stock motor and cam it jumps all over on start up untill the engine is warm and in closed loop for a while. Are you running a headed O2 sensor with those headers?

Damn computer is pissing me off!!!!! Let's try this reply for the fourth time. I did a major rearrange my room for a small studio and computer work workstation...now I'm dropping my wifi randomly so I'm currently wifi tethering my phone

165 ECM. Both the tune and the engine are set to 8* advance for the base time. Idle timing from 800-1200 RPM is 32.7*.

        APYP tune changes:
        30# injectors
PE spark zeroed, coolant temp spark correction disabled - timing is running off a reworked main table, 36* all in by 3000 RPM when in the trottle.
        fans lowered for 180* thermostat
closed loop disabled, will enable later on (probably above 1500 RPM)

The car really makes some power above 2000 RPM, I only took it up and down the road in first though. Reminds me of my old YZ250...I hope switching from 2.73's to 3.42's will help smooth out the power band.

This is what Engine Analyser Pro v3.9 gave me when I entered all the detailed head and cam specs:

Why did you go with 30# injectors, those are what most guys run with 383's

30# @ stock pressure with 90% duty cycle at .5 bsfc can support around 430hp. EA Pro puts me at 433hp.

This is the correct formula, right? - Injector Rating x # of injectors x Injector Duty Cycle / Brake Specific Fuel Consumption = Maximum Horsepower

Plus, how ofter can you find a set of injectors that are cleaned, flow matched, and shipped to your door for 60 bucks

If I do go another route there is a strong chance I'd just give it to you. I have a few other motors sitting around but the only one that could possibly handle this cam is the DZ 302 that has been sitting on the stand for a couple years.

How about now? I forgot to change a setting on facebook for that video.

I will most likely have to tune by plug reading and vacuum guage. Fun.

That was before I changed the plugs. I bought some NGK's that the guy said were correct for the motor...that didn't turn out to be the case. Luckily only the ground straps were touched, any longer and it would have been disasterous, needless to say I have some Bosch in there at the moment.
