My fiance wanted me to ask you all if any of you have swapped your driveshaft for an aluminum one (preferrably 3rd gens) ?? Did you see any noticable improvements in gas milage or power? Basically, is it worth the upgrade?

You can usually pick them up relatively cheaply. It weighs less than the stock steel one, so that means less overall weight, and a lot less rotating mass, thus less drivetrain loss between the engine and the wheels. I'm sure it's not a huge increase in power or economy, but it's definitely a popular swap.Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

I have a Inland Empire drive shaft with maybe 150 miles on it if anyone is interested. I bought it from jegs last year and no longer need it.

Eh, I would say that depends on what kind of driving you do. In the horrendous stop and go mayhem of east side city driving, id say the reduction in rotating mass makes a difference. If youre mostly cruising 55+ highways, i wouldn't expect to notice any improvement.Originally posted by WMCCjames View PostIt won't make a hill of beans difference in performance or economy..at least enough to notice.
In the relatively near future I may have an aluminum driveshaft available for trade plus cash.Originally posted by Gregs_gsxr View Postfinding them isnt always easy, I been keeping an eye out and havent seen anything lately-Joel

gotcha I was planning on selling it before I sold the car but I told the current buyer it had an aluminum driveshaft and I showed him the underside of the car. I am not going to make any changes from how I advertised the car.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View Postdont worry about stepping on any toes brian. I threw an aluminum one from Inland Empire on my '96 when my mid-ship bearing died. VASTLY improved the noise and won't have that problem again. As far as gas or power improvements, I'm not thinking so. The fact that it still hauls the car's weight kinda negates the rotational mass thing, but, it is (as far as my stock shaft went) way more peace of mind that it's now one piece and simpler, if nothing else.sigpic
