  • SMAN's Dyno Disater - Updated - Electrical Issues

Well maybe it wasn't a disaster, but when a part physically comes off the car and fluids start leaking everywhere, close enough.

I told myself I wasnt going to touch it for a week, let myself cool down...

Tore into it today and got my tailshaft the rest of the way out/apart, here are my findings, many have already seen, but for those that werent there, this happened on the dyno last saturday.

    Fun eh?

So still on the hunt for a tailshaft, if youve got one PLEASE let me know, there super hard to find, I thought I had one, but I havent heard from the guy, so im continuing my search.

Also need a poly trans mount, and aluminum driveshaft from an A4 ls1 car. A body or xmember mounted tq arm setup is also on my list, but not super important right now. Both WW and Back to the Bricks are this week and id really like to have my car, but without this stuff, it aint gonna happen...

Biggest worry is this, after I got it all apart, I noticed some play in the tailshaft itself, kinda scares me, is this acceptable?

And, many of you know how hot its been lately, i HATE the heat, and while the shop has a furnace, it lacks air, except for today, hehe.

Thought youd enjoy my redneck abilities Look janky? Yup. Keep the shop at a cool 72? Absolutly.

Looks like it could have been a torque arm problem? How was the bushing for the torque arm? Good luck with the hunt. Eric L

Torque arm busing was good, want to switch to a body or xmember one just in case though.

build theses trans all the time, yes play is fine, however a LOT means something is loose in there hahaha

And that much play is perfectly normal.
However i've never seen that part break before lol

I may see my trans guy later today and I'll see if he can get his hands on an "improved" tailshaft and what the cost may be. This may be ancient technology, but are there lift bars that may be available for your year? It may be a viable answer.

Good luck with the tailshaft, Spencer. Couldn't believe when I saw the crack up on the lift... I definitely want to get a body mounted tq arm bracket but damn they're expensive.

If you are running solid motor mounts on the engine this could also cause the tailshaft housing to crack.

I have a few guys here at work looking. I know one believes he has one out of a V6 car, does anyone know if it is the same rear housing or not? Later today I will look up the part numbers and check myself but I figured someone already know that answer.

Should be the same, but this worries me now, I run slicks And my car Bangs Hard 2nd and 3rd Hopefully in the future i do not break anything being i have poly mounts.

But if i haven't broken anything and i've been running on the street with slicks, And this was on the dyno where the car really couldn't move around, i see premature failure Before it was even in your car.

Honestly, torque arms mounted to the weakest point of the transmission are just asking for trouble. Maybe there were hairline cracks, maybe not... but I wouldn't assume that he had a failed part.

Holy shit man! I know it's uber unfortunate, but that's a fantastic looking break! Buy one of these NOW:

Again, sorry this happened to you. Hopefully you can get it up and running quickly. If it were me though, that tail shaft play would scare the hell out of me.

The chrome 5 spokes are my soon to be drag pack, should I ever get my car fixed, sorry.

The v6 should have the same tailshaft, I think. Don't see why not, it's the same trans and nothing else in the drive line changes v6 to v8.

I don't have solid mounts, but I do have poly.

This trans grabs 2nd REAL hard, I mean it scares some people, even spins the tires when it grabs 2nd at the track. This has always kinda make me wonder as to how hard on stuff this is.

That's exactly what I have planned, but I just wasn't to get it drivable for this week.

And yes that much play scares the living daylights or of me.....

pretty sure the shaft caused the issue. he said it shook then went. the steel shaft probably couldnt take that rpm and became a noodle. there is a reason ls1 had an aluminum. there also was a tsb about the steel shafts causing a vibration
