My custom sub box

Thanks guys for all the comments! I did originally go and try to get red carpet for the box. I found it extremely hard to match the color and I could not find another thirdgen around here with the same red interior for me to cut a piece out and cover the box. I ended up going with the black due to the fact of all the black in my car already. Dash, trim, floor mats...you get the point. Overall I like it right now but if I do ever come across a red interior at a local yard I will recover it just to see the difference in looks. But as you can see how many times I changed the hatch it may look different next month! This is my 3rd system in this car and I have only had it for 4 or 5 months!

Ok guys so I was out messing with the car today and of course blasting the radio listen to the great boom of my subs and believe it or not those kicker subs actually hit so hard that it blew the top of my box off! Now I did not have too many screws in the hold it down but the subs pulled them right out, any ideas how to strengthen this area? Or should I simply screw it down with more screws?

carpenters glue & silicone caulk



start sealing it with the glue first , drill the screws in...then hit it with the caulk it creates a perfect seal... the screws by itself dont really make a good seal

it would be easier if you could go through the bottom to hit it with the caulk.. [assuming the bottom is just held with screws also]

Thanks! The bottom is actually screwed in and caulked from the inside so theres no taking that apart. The only reason I just screwed the top down was for wasy removal! But I think I am going to go ahead and do that...Do you think liquid nails would work as well as carpenter glue?

It should yea. Look for the Luquid Nails Projects, that bonds really well to wood, if you cant find that just use the heavy duty one.. If you cant find that carpenters glue

yea the only reason I asked was cause I have some liquid nails at home, so I amgoing to go ahead and try that then re-screw the top down and prolly using a few more screws this time...Only problem is the box will be in there pernament unless I cut it out...

With any type of glue or sealant that would be the case.

From the little reading I'm done, it was suggested to use some form of a polyurethane caulk; a sealant that will remain permanently flexible.

thats what I hope to do with mine, I bought a box for mine with speakers and am wanting more of a flat look.. yours is exactly what I am hoping to do to my 83.. so if you wanna send me your plans I would love you for life..

I went with liquid nails and completed it last night. So far so good looks to have sealed right up and its def not going anywhere now! I havent turned the subs back on yet as I want to give it time to dry and settle before I attempt to run the mad watts again !

Thank you! I love the way the box came out even with it being black. I would have gone with red if I could have found a perfect match or even another thirdgen that I could have stole some red carpet from. I personally think the black felt looks good as my interior has a lot of black in it already. Here are the plans that I used to build the box. This set of plans is to build the base and then you have to measure and cut the top exactly how you want it. All you need is a sheet of 3/4 MDF screws and liquid nails or some kind of sealer. Look at my car domain site for the pictures of the complete build, I took some detailed ones so you can see the progress. But enjoy and if you start builinding one please share the PICTURES I'd love to see how it'd turn out. I actually just finished building one for my buddies 4th gen and I like the way I did his better so I am already considering changing mine again...

I built a couple for my friends back in high school for some extra doh.. They really arent that hard to make, just if you want it to sound good do the math and get it as precise as you can with the cubic inches recommended from the woofer (should be in the manual somewhere) to make it sound its best.
