Hey all! Trying my hand at some painting. First time trying it out so I need some advice. I got the Duplicolor Paint shop ready to spray paint. I have a siphon feed sprayer. I have the whole panel prepped and everything and went to put on the first coat of primer but I'm having some issues. The paint is coming out almost stringy. Like it's drying the moment it hits the air. It's also sputtering when it comes out. I've messed around with the settings and pressure and can't seem to get it right. I'm sure it's something stupid, I just hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks!!!

Primer seams to thick I would reduce it and make sure your gun has a large enuff fluid tip.sigpic1997 firehawk # 115 6 speed. Its just a little ole LT1

It's lacuar paint and primer and just because it says ready to spray doesn't mean that its ready to spray you will need Atleast a 1.6 fluid tip. It is impossible to explain this without seing exactly what your doing and what the product is doing also air pressure is very important u can get the same results that you are having with out enuff air .sigpic1997 firehawk # 115 6 speed. I checked and it has a 1.8 tip. Was wondering the same thing too. I'll see if I can get a video, although it's a little hard to see. When it isn't sputtering it does look like it's coming out good, but there's like no coverage. I'll try with a higher pressure and see how it goes.1995 Trans Am Firebird. Wow Canon that's a big tip that should work fine with primer now air pressure and the primer being to thick you may need to reduce this more I'm sure they sell reducer were you got the primer Cus if the air pressure don't fix it then u will have to thin it down .sigpic1997 firehawk # 115 6 speed. Might want to just pic up a cheap harbor freight gravity fed spray gun. This will help keep you air pressure down, reduce the primer and set you spray fan. You said it was coming out sticky which also sounds like you could be drying before it even hits the panel. Gravity guns are gonna way better, use less air pressure and have way less over spray too.'91 Camaro Modded, LSx, House of Kolor Intense White, lowered, GS chrome 18" wheels, 14" Brembo CTS-V on all 4 corners, LS rear end, FP suspension components

That is a huge tip!!! I use a 1.4 and it hammers on my primer. Like everyone else said, mix your primer well, check your gun for being clean, make sure you are mixing it correct, try different air pressure, if all is good I'm betting it's junk primer2002 Z28 Camaro A4

Well first off thanks for all your help! I used a little acetone to thin down the primer and it shot great! I got it sanded down and went to shoot the color and something weird is happening. The color comes out great, but it basically is going on the surface really rough. It almost feels like sandpaper on the whole panel. I got it sanded back down smooth, but before I continue I want to see what the problem is. Am I going on too thick/thin?1995 Trans Am Firebird. LT1 with 6 Speed manual. cc503 Cam. Ok well glad that it worked but acetone is not recamended at all in auto paint I would use the proper reduceing solvent next time . U didn't use acetone in the paint did you that mite be your problem if not then how far away from the palel are you you should be 6/8 inches from the panel and be doing a 50% overlapOriginally posted by jgardner View PostWell first off thanks for all your help! If it feels gritty then you are "dusting" it on. It's not wet enough. Yeah bad call on using acetone. You need to use actual reducer. Also you should be clearing already. Base coat isn't made to dry and continue another day, you put it on until covered, let it flash then mix your clear.
Even if the base is gritty you can still clear over it, it won't effect your final look as long as it laud out even and is gritty everywhere not spotty.2002 Z28 Camaro A4
