I need a 400 longblock. Can be stock. Just need block, crank, rods (if it's got alot of miles I'll probably toss in new pistons and rings) and assembled heads. I'm looking to start my '76 project I've had behind the barn for the last year. I just got an email from my Grandpa saying his sister died but because of it he got $62,500 He's giving each son/daughter 6k (thats 24k right there) and each grandson/granddaughter 2k. I figure that's enough for me to go and pull this thing outta the garage and drop in a motor and I've got the stock trans (just don't know how reliable it is...). I'll worry about new paint and interior later. Besides, what screams american muscle better then a ratty 1976 Trans Am flying down the road with open headers and a faded paintjob with a peeling pheonix?

Thanks but no thanks. I'm hoping to find a 400 longblock for less then 500. I'm fine with a junker that hasn't ran in 15 years cause I'll be going through it anyways.Originally posted by scholtmj View PostI have a bare 400 SBC 4-bolt that's been degreased and magnafluxed. $300 bucks and it's yours. 400 Pontiacs are really starting to become more and more scarce. Check the heads too...everyone wants 6x heads, but the 4x heads are nearly as good...a set of 6x heads might run you 500 for rebuilders...here's a good article to start with...

Found one! Just got back from my adventure A 400sbc with 68,090 miles on it. The guys is tearing it out of his car today to drop in a built 408. I heard it running an everything! The way it sounded and from what he told me I may just clean the engine up, paint it, and drop it in. Going back to get it next weekend with a whopping $650.2005 Yamaha R6

Are you putting a 400sbc in a '76 bird? It'll be some work b/c i don't think you could get a stock sbc in a bird in '76. You'll have to move the battery to the other side, fuel line to the other side, diff motor mounts.

Awright, now I'm really confused...this is going in a '76 Pontiac?Originally posted by MrMojoRisin681 View PostAre you putting a 400sbc in a '76 bird? I think you'll need a new bellhousing too if that's the case (assuming you've got the original tranny) and maybe a driveshaft (again, more assumptions).
Not sure what it's going to do to heater hose routing, but you might have to play with that as well as well.
Not a big deal, very easily done, but not quite a bolt in installation.Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! AN ENGINE THAT SHAKES MY INTERNAL ORGANS LIKE THEY GOT PARKINSON'S! It didn't matter to me if it was a SBP or SBC. Neither of a know if it's a 2 or 4 bolt. He's owned the car since new and never taken it apart.Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostNice deal...for whatever reason, I thought you wanted a Pontiac block...ehh, this one will be easier to fit anyway...lol...

Battery is already in the trunk!Originally posted by MrMojoRisin681 View PostAre you putting a 400sbc in a '76 bird? It'll be some work b/c i don't think you could get a stock sbc in a bird in '76. You'll have to move the battery to the other side, fuel line to the other side, diff motor mounts.
Motor mounts arent a problem. In no way am I afraid of getting my hands dirty....
Yup '76 firebird. He's got a trans I can buy for an extra $350 if I want it. I probably will because I know it's in full working order as of today (when we went for a drive in his car) and its been working hand in hand with that motor for almost 70k miles. Who needs a heater?Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostAwright, now I'm really confused...this is going in a '76 Pontiac?

Like I said before, I'm not afraid of getting dirty and doing custom stuff. I know an engine swap like this isnt direct bolt in.

I know it was coming. I don't have a digital camera at the moment. I was at the lake on a friends boat (and extremely drunk) and me and a buddy were wrestling on the front of the pontoon and as a victory celebration he threw me in..... @$$hole!
Just picture a 1976 Firebird with a tan/black interior and red exterior with gold/black pheonix. That's what you'd have if it was completely assembled. Currently its in about 15 boxes in the loft of my barn and its a roller needing floor pans. My uncle is a pro welder/autobody guru and this weekend is coming out to weld in new pans and fix a dent in the fender in exchange for beer and BBQ2005 Yamaha R6

The 400 was out of his 1971 Impala orginally. He tore it out of that to put in his Camaro after he wrecked the Impala.Originally posted by Yoeasy69 View PostSee if you can get the casting numbers off it and i can run them.. and tell you if it is a 4 bolt or a 2 bolt main.. did he say what the motor came out of if he knew?2005 Yamaha R6
