What do you guys think about making an 800 mile trek in a really clean original 100k mile 1984 stock/unmolested chevy truck? I think i should have no problems, but then again it is also 32 years old. I can get a flight free with skymiles, so expense would be just the fuel for a one way trip at ~15mpg. Alternative is finding someone with a car hauler and cover the expense which will be a lot more than the cost of driving it.

I'd do it. When I was in Nebraska I found a 66 C10 that I wanted to buy it was cheap and beat up but it had the original running straight 6 in it. If the owner would have said that he thought it would have honestly made the 13 Hour trip back to MI I would have bought it and drove it home! He was worried about the brakes and suspension and such, it ran well actually. So what I am saying is do it! I am about to drive 6 hours for a vette, potentially.

I did it with a 1977 Dodge with more miles for 2000+ miles with no real issues. Again, we had a mechanic inspect it before flying in and do very basic maintenance, but at the minimum i would at least have it inspected for $100 or less.

Some tips if you do it:

When you land, buy spare belts, hoses, premixed coolant, etc. from a parts store chain we have locally at home. Also buy a basic portable mechanics tool kit from a similar establishment or home depot or the like. Do not open them unless needed. Return whatever you don't need when you make it back.

Expect the radio to not work or get reception. Load up on music on your phone in case cell reception sucks too.

Make sure the tires will make the trip.

Bring air fresheners just in case. Fortunately just a local trip but had a really bad experience with this one once, lol.

Spare can of gas on the way home is always a good idea. Fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate.

The old guy in me says why take a chance when you can open trailer ship for not much more.

it sounds like ill have access to a dmax and a carhauler so ill probably go that route pending details. While i like the adventure of a cross country trek and the idea of a 4 barrel howling away for 11 hours i think its worth the extra peace of mind that we'll make it back in one piece.

I'll post details once there is a deposit on it. Not that i expect any competition here i just dont like to gloat about something before its happened. a buddy is going to check it out tomorrow for me and i'll probably negotiate the price over the phone based on his pictures and description i get from him. I talked to the owner last night. everything sounded right about it, he bought it off the original owner 6 months ago, its a legit unmolested old man truck. The guy said he wouldnt be afraid to drive it to iowa with the AC on but still said its a 32 year old truck so a trailer might be a good idea.
