That way makes me nervous. I don't want to strip out the threads in my crankshaft

when I did mine I removed the thick spacer on the bolt and carefully threaded the bolt in and watched the hub as I tightened it. Make sure the hub moves as you tighten it until it is seated all the way on. Then I removed the bolt and put the spacer back on and tightened to spec.

I use a BFH or air hammer with a flat bit to carefully ease the balancer on until I can get the bold started more than a few threads, then drive it home and torque.

I've always used a large socket/hammer to seat the pulley then used the old bolt to pull it in. Heating the pulley will help get it far enough on the snout to get a few threads in.

Some reuse the old bolt, I always use a new one when doing the final torque or install an ARP bolt. I want to say the ARP bolt was a bit longer, but it's been awhile since I've installed one.

yes the ls7 bolt in about an inch longer

or you can make your own...get some threaded rod, weld a thick washer and nut on the end

                  edit: thread size 16mm x 2.0 x 140mm

Yes the ls7 bolt is an inch longer . I did make and sell a few threaded rod installers a long time ago but was concerned cause all thread isn't very high quality stuff. There used to be a guy on ls1 tech that made and sold installers with a bearing and all pretty cheap

Many autoparts stores have tools to rent or buy. Should be one in your area that does the same.

Most of the generic installers aren't long enough

Easy enough to fashion your own. get threaded rod, screw it in all the way then put a washer and a bearing and another washer on after balancer is put in place, the a nut to press the balancer on the crank shaft. That way you are not stressing the crank shaft threads. NOTE: make sure you get rod with correct threads.

No one had an ls installer. It's one of a kind.
