all depends what you want to build it for.. newly rebuilt motors are like a grand if not more because its usually backed by a warranty..they do all the labor and machine work... if you find a used setup and get a rebuild kit "too keep it stock" is only like 175-300 bucks for bearings, seals, pistons, timeing set,stock cam,rings.. ect.. every wearable part on the motor.. then to get it machined just bored and honed for the new pistons thats maybe 75-150 bucks here they bore and hone and balance for about 125... the trans depending on the condition might just need a good clean up and filter "auto" and any wearable parts replaced clutch ect.. stock its not bad.. its when you decide heck while im in there i should upgrade incase i wanna add more power maybe get a forged roatating assembly, a bigger aftermarket cam,aftermarket heads.. thats when it shoots up.. we may complain about the prices of it but really money to power wise and total cost of a built motor your not going to get much cheeper than a small block chevy v8 for aftermarket parts

idk if this is wat your looking for but i think its a 99 5.3l im not sure on teh price but im pretty sure you could get it for 250 it at a friends house and its a close friends motor so if ur interested let me know and i will look into it farther.

Thanks for all the info guys. I found a motor and trans for $300. So once I sell my guitar and stuff I'll be talking to the guy more about it and see if it's even what I want/need.
