  • Anyone have a hook-up on engine rebuilding supplies?

The engine in my winter DD has started making noise, sounds like a rod knock starting.
I am not very suprised, as before I got it, it was not taken care of.

    It is a 1996 Saturn SC1

I am looking to do bearings, rings, oil pump and gasket kit as a minimum.

How many miles on it? Saturn engines are notorious for burning oil and there is a fix, I think it involves drilling some holes in the pistons though.

Yep that or the updated pistons from 99+

It used to burn a lot more oil when I got it, I'll probably get the new pistons/rods online

You could probably get the stock rods reconditioned for about 50 bucks at a local shop.

A lot of people just use 2000 and newer rods/pistons, since they were corrected and don't have the oil burning issue.

If I could get a DOHC and 5 speed car that was totaled for cheap I'd think about a swap, but I think I rather put as little money as I need into that and more into the Camaro

I think it was 99 when they switched, but they still burned oil. Make sure holes are drilled into oil ring slot.

if you find it for under 800 get it, cause your not going to get a DOHC engine for under that alone, there is a guy in commerce that buys and rebuilds saturns, wont even rebuild it for under 1200.00... I just swapped out a 2001 saturn DOHC engine, and it took 2 weeks to find one and it was 800.00 w/trans and we pulled it.

Huh...we scrapped the last DOHC motor we had The spider gears blew right out of the transmission. Sold the car for $800 with a cheap junkyard motor/trans we put in.

I just got a 1998 SL2 with 75,000 on it for $350 from one of my neighbors friends.

Runs and drives, got a$$ packed by something big though.

I now have to decide if I want to do a 5 speed swap, or buy a TAAT for the DOHC...
