  • Wanted: Shop workbenches and BIG garage door opener

Now that ive pretty much got all the work done on the house, im moving on the barn.

Got a SWEET air compressor for christmas. The barn is a new build, within the last 36months. Currently un-insulated, open truss roof. Ive managed to come up with some 6mil reinforced vis-queen plastic that will get stapled to the rafters and I have more than a pallet of the fluffy insulation. I dont really have a ton of money to dump into this thing currently, and all the insulation stuff is free and coming from work, thats the only reason im really doing it that way.

Theres lots of light, and 4 outlets every 8ft down every wall, so no problem there.

Im really only lacking a few things, one is a running water, but thats a whole nother issue all together. My biggest concern right now, is that I have absolutely no where to work on anything. Ive got some industrial shelving, but no work space or benches. If anyone has anything or knows of anything it would be greatly appreciated. I want to spend little to no money, because I have none, lol.

Another thing im missing is a garage door opener. Im having a hard time finding one, been to lowes, home depot, and mendards, and no one has an opener for a 10ft tall door, and its a big heavy insulated one too, will probably need a 3/4 or 1hp model. If anyone has a lead on one please holler!

    Please and thanks!

I know bigjon had a work bench for free a few weeks back, might want to check with him

For the door opener, go to a commercial door installation company. We had Liftmaster's at our shop, and we had a 14x20 door with no issues for 10 years(no issues, just got rid of the shop)

Lary, those are sweet! Only one I could find was the liftmaster 3800, which is totally bad ass. Just a little out of my price range though. Guess Ill be saving my pennies for that one!

That liftmaster will be about your cheapest option for a jackshaft opener. I have been keeping my eyes out for one too because one of my garage doors has zero headroom. A friend of mine just had the 3800 professionally installed with a couple options and it was around $500.

I would keep your eye out on auction zip and craislist for a nice workbench. Workbenches are one of those thing that "they don't make them like they used to".

Last winter I was at a middle school auction and they had those nice 4x8 lab tables that had a slate top on them. I could have bought them for $5.00 a piece but they were extremely heavy and I didn't have a place to store them.

i feel your pain on a garage door opener. i have a 11' tall door and can't find a used one for the life of me. as for the work bench, do what im doing. build one then you can modify it how you want it. im planning on building a big horse shoe style bench for my pole barn. that will go right into my clean room when i get 1 build lol. then im going to gover it with 10 gauge stainless sheets as i can aford it. good luck.

You can always pick up some kitchen cabinets for free on craigslist, too. A little bit of paint (if it's even necessary) and a piece of plywood and you'll have plenty of counter space.
