Or you could buy a LT1 car for 3500 and have 1500 for some repairs and mods(and have the right transmission)

OP: do whatever you think is right. make sure you will have no regrets.

THIS. Going to be very hard to find a LS1 Trans Am that's presentable and doesn't have 150k+ on it and needing repairs.

I agree but they are out there. A little search and you can be in a presentable LS1 car for $5,000, A nice LT1 car would be a option too but I would want a NICE one if thats the case. We just had a LS1 car on here sell for less then $5k I believe.

I agree with Fred, be patient, and keep on the look out everywhere. I have my eyes peeled for a certain vehicle as well unfortunatly they are not too common.
$4-5,000 should buy you a pretty decent 93-97 Trans Am. You might find a 98+ trans am but it will likely have more miles than you want.

I don't know your situation but if it were me I would try to come closer to 6-7,000 and that should give more options from 98+ LS cars with less miles in better condition.

Well just an update on that yellow trans am. i emailed him almost the instant i found the posting instead of calling because of how late it was, he emailed me back and said that he replaced the original LT1 with another, so no 350 crate. He told me the clutch was just replaced it doesnt leak anything and it runs and drives great (of course ) the only thing it needs is a window regulator and some minor paint touch up.
ill give him a call this evening and find out how many miles the body has as well as the typical questions, thanks again for all the help and advice!

Ive been looking for about two years now, im anxious but i know better than to pounce on the first one i see. And as far as the price goes being 17 does really mean you can save up as much money making less than min. wage. and especially with a broken foot .

+1 I couldn't agree more with Fred, I rushed and ended up with the white thing in my sig (hasn't turned out too bad though ) and Fred got what I was looking for. Like he said it took him a damn long while to find it too. Take your time (you have plenty of it) and the more time you wait and search around you can even start saving up a bit more, whether it's to buy more of a car or to buy your first mods IMO the car in the link is a no go (but I am a yellow fan), take your time and shop around for as close to an unmolested car as possible; they exist but they are hard to fine. It will be worth it, trust us... We're doctors.

I would be looking for an LS1 car. Don't be afraid of high mileage either as long as the car is taken care of. Both of my LS1 cars have gone over 100K and both had no real issues to speak of.

Heck I paid less than your looking to spend for my current LS1 car and while it did need a transmission at the time its worked out very well. I still have less than 5K into the car. It runs well and is decently clean!

Called on the yellow trans am just now and heres what i found out
                          -163k on the body
-40k on replaced LT1 (engine has headers and cam, i didnt ask about the cam specs)
-60k on rebuilt trans ( completely rebuilt)
-no rust (not driven in the snow)
-The guy is the second owner (has owned it since 1999)
-all electronics work (fans, lights, defrost, but needs a window regulator)
                          -t tops dont leak
-has not been driven in a while but he does start it occasionally.
                          -just repainted yellow
                          -re-done interior

so all that to me, means this guy is going to ohio.

Did you go "is that a new lt1 or what?" or say tell me about the engine. Cause if you said lt1 then he could be just agreeing with you.

Did he say if he had reciepts for any of the work done? I'd be a lil nervous as to if it was a backyard built car... at least with him being someone u dont know... I didnt see ne1 mention it so i thought i'd throw it out there too, if u do go n look at it make sure to listen for any noises from the rear end, if the engine is built and the cars been beat on who knows how long that stock rear will last you
