Rare '99 HO SS

Y'know, the more I started thinking about this, I started wondering if this car could really be built this way without a 1LE option to get the manual windows and locks.

Well, the RPO for power windows is A31, an the RPO for power locks is AU3.

And this car doesn't have either of those...nor, obviously, the ILE.

Somebody got this car through the system somehow...

Considering they only made 66 1LEs total in '99...well...a very rare car for sure...

124 total...and a 2001 1LE Firehawk just moved up the bucket list a couple of notches...

And I am proud to say that I drove a 1997 1LE Formula that was new on the lot at the Pontiac dealership that's right there on 28th street (whatever the name of it is)...peeked through the window and went "Ram Air with cloth interior? Roll up windows? No...no way...it can't be"...popped the door, and sure enough, 1LE on the door sticker...

Knew I couldn't afford it, but took it for a test drive anyway...and they left me unsupervised too...lol...

My first reaction..."this skip-shift SUCKS".

I'm not saying it cant be done but I doubt the car is very nice if it has a rebuilt title. The crash would have needed to cause lots of damage to total that car out when it was only 2 years old.

Mine is rebuilt. You would NEVER know by looking at it(aside from the improved glossy clearcoated engine bay..). Its all about taking the time using quality GM parts to rebuild it right. Most people try and go the cheap route to get it back on the road, the owner before me definately made sure everything was back to as good as new or better than new.

i dont know for certain but im pretty sure you could order a car that way. I dont know if you remember SS4Matt's car but his was a hardtop with cloth and power nothing, and i dont think it was a 1LE.

i think the only 2 options i would really want on a 4th gen is t-tops and leather, foglights (maybe) oh and 1LE

I live without keyless on a daily basis (the keyless on my truck is so crappy i dont bother using it). I never use A/C, ive used defrost once or twice ever, and the power windows suck anyway. Wouldnt really miss any of that - which is why im getting rid of some of those things lol

Agree with almost all of that - but defrost is damn important to have. I can understand deleting the A/C and the A/C portion at the firewall and even looked into what it'd take to remove the entire AC system and leave only the heater core (which is on the interior of the firewall, so you'd still have a decently smooth patch panel over the hole in the firewall) but having defrost is damned important

That one night that a handful of us were at Woodward and a really nasty thunderstorm rolled in - I was driving home and Angie was having to wipe the interior side of the windshield as I drove because we had to have the windows up while it was downpouring and the windows were steaming up. My defrost system sucks because of my dash change but for people that have a good working defrost I'd never recommend removing it.

the defrost we are talking about is the rear window grid, not the windshield blower. Frankly the rear defrost is alot like the power windows and fail to work worth a damn in the first place.

Ah yeah - forgot this car didn't come with REAR defrost. Yeah I haven't used that all year - never rewired the new switch for it.

Yeah, I drive by Matt's car every month or so...never seems to move...the never-ending project...

And yeah, I'm sure you could order it that way, but you had to be creative about it...you'd need to physically delete the power options from the SS and then add in the non-power options...whoever wanted to do that needed to have an plan and a cooperative dealer...

You just don't see many of them that way...

I can also vouch for the importance of defrost/defog in a car. As many of you know from another thread on here, I have some older Goodyear Eagle GT HR tires on my 4th gen vert. On the day of my nephew's wedding in Gladwin, we were getting near constant monsoons here in Detroit. Not wanting to end up with my Camaro in a ditch thanks to the skittish and iffy rubber, I took my old '99 Cadillac DeVille Concours because it had more road weight, better overall safety, and nearly-new Michelins. I was a little late getting to the ceremony, but I was there in time for the family photos and all of the reception.

But when the time came to drive back to Detroit, the rains had cleared yet the humidity was insane and the fog hung thick in the air. Great time for me to find out that I had a No-Op condition on my defroster/defog! Between Gladwin and Bay City I had to use airflow from the the side windows, a little bit of convection from the heater core, wipers, and a number of McDonald's napkins. Once I hit I-75, there was much better visibility.

Like I said...it can be done its just that most people don't take the time. My dad is a body man and 90% of the cars he has owned have been totaled. The average person would never know but a trained eye will pick up may different things on a rebuilt car.

I wouldnt care if a car had a rebuilt title. If anything, the car has a history, a story that goes with the car. Parts of me would rather own a car that has a story then the typical " It lives its life on the street or in my garage from day one"

If my car could talk, I imagine it would have some good stories to tell.

Well Nate, it shouldnt be too hard to find a totaled out/rebuilt car for cheap. Me personally....I like straight frames and body lines!
