  • Greeting from Clio - 91 TA Convertible

Hi there! I’m Steve and live in Clio, MI.
I have just started my second f-body collection, one car strong right now! That one car is a ’91 Trans Am Convertible and it needs a fair bit of work, especially with the paint.

Previously (over 10 years ago) I owned an ’85 Z28 and an ’89 Formula. The Z28 found a ditch (more like a ravine) one cold, icy November night on a very crowned back road in Birch Run. Still don’t know why I was driving it that night, bad decision. The Formula had a happier ending, at least for the car, as I traded it in for a new ’99 Dodge Ram. I loved those cars, I kept them in great shape and like so many of us I wish I still had them. Both vehicles were red, had T-tops, and were a blast to drive. The Formula even had a CD player, my first car to have one.

Then - 10 long years without an f-body – until now. I decided I wanted to buy a car or two or three and started looking. My favorites are the 2nd and 3rd generation cars so that was my focus and I ended up looking at and driving a decent ’76 Trans Am. The ’76 deal fell through, but then I came across this ’91 convertible and it was done, I was finally an f-body owner again. Ahhhhhhhh.

I plan on restoring this ’91 and keeping it mostly stock and hopefully I can secure an early 70’s car in the near future. I’ve already started trying to restore the paint, however there are a couple of areas that just aren’t cooperating including the trunk lid. I’m afraid I may end up repainting the car. I want to make a decision soon so I can try and get the painting done before the warm weather comes back around.

I’m a little short on pictures right now (I’m traveling) but this will give you an idea of what I’m working with. These pictures are after I started restoring the paint, but you can see what it looked like to begin with and where I am at currently.

I look forward to meeting many of you and participating in events next year!

    Have a great Thanksgiving,
    Steve

Thank you, all. I have the car running well but have quite a few items under the hood to fix and it should be a fun winter. The most annoying item right now is getting my headers to seat and seal properly for more than 100 miles.

Can't wait for the next show/cruise season!

Welcome to the site and good job with the paint! What kind of gaskets are you using on the headers? I've heard of the bolts bottoming out before the headers were quite sealed before...took precaution and put in some extra washers when I did mine.

                    Used to own a Firebird.

Welcome to the site! Did you de-oxidize the paint or was the white just dust? Paint looks pretty darn good on that hood!!! Keep up the great work and let us know your secrets.

That's odd about the headers, hope you find out what the problem is.

I WISH it was only dust! I have most of the car looking ok except for the trunk lid and rear bumper and I'm almost to the point where I will have to give up. I really wanted to save the original paint, but I think the car deserves a new paint job now.

My only secret is time and patience. I started out with a medium compound to remove the oxidation and progressively moved towards polish and wax, it's been a lot of work.
