So for anyone how has had or still has a third gen with t-tops, whats your opinion on them? They are cool but I'm kind of skeptical on getting a 3rd gen with t-tops because of the bad sealing and rusting problems. So is it worth looking for one with t-tops and having to replace the weather stripping and headliner or should I look over getting a car with t-tops is my question for you guys.

Id say for a thirdgen get a hardtop. Fourthgen TTops seem to work great though.Originally posted by thursday12889So for anyone how has had or still has a third gen with t-tops, whats your opinion on them? A well maintained good condition thirdgen should have TTops that work fine though as well.. but if its a rough car I wouldnt count on it. And if they leaked at one time.. floor board is probably shot.

Yep. It is very seldom that you'll find a Third gen T-Top that doesn't have floor problems. Heck, even my 4th gen has leaking T-Tops.Nick H.

Even on a car that's always stored and almost never sees bad weather the seals still will dry up and shrink. I know the ones on the IROC have lots of wind noise. I'll probably wind up replacing them. I don't believe they leak water that I'm aware of but I haven't washed the car in years myself so I can't remember if it leaked at all.

I love mine, I had to change the t-top weather stripping. Only reason was the center piece was getting all rusting pretty bad. So I bought all new weather stripping, I got a new metal piece that sits on top. ( I found 1 at a junkyard and they gave it to me for free). I sand blasted the center piece, primered and painted it black, and I even put a couple coats of clear on it. It was worth it to do it right. I love my car with the t-tops off. Ive even been caught in the rain once. But if you go fast enough.....you really dont get wet. LOL!
Thats the only reason why I bought my car was because it has T-tops. If thats the only reason keeping you from buying a 3rd gen t-top car, let me show you mine, it might change your mind.sigpic

Well lets see pics!!!!
If you find one you like, and it has ttops BUY IT. I love mine. The only way i buy a fbody without ttops is it being a 4th gen and convert it to ttops. I LOVE mine.

The engine is pretty dirty for $9 G's.
I know a clean 3rd gen is hard to find but imo keep looking

My tops leak a little on the 85, only in the corner it drips down the window, I would say my car is not in good shape, but theres no rust up top and it only leaks inside because of a seal that I can't find in the back (I think over the hatch), The headliner is very ratty from wind damage but thats ok for my beater.

they both have their advantages. if your seals are good and the section isn't rusted you should have a problem.
i was always told to avoid the t-tops. my decision was made easier knowing the 350 91-92 z's only came hardtop so i've lived the last 10 years of my life unknowing and happy with my hardtop. i now have 4 other thirdgens... all t-top that i've bought to build and play since my 91 is too nice to drive.
all have high mileage, only one car leaks and it's a 170k car with worn seals. when we had nice weather for thanksgiving i had just bought my first t-top 92. took them off for a trip to the store with the heat on full blast.
can't wait for summer with the t-tops.
