The T5 swap is more about knowing what to do to get it done right. It isn't a cheap swap at all unless you really shop around and gamble on a used T5. Both used trans I have purchased needed to be torn apart for new bearings.

To be honest, I think his car is great the way it is, I think he should leave it stock. This is the car next to mine at a car show last spring:
He just got the car painted and got new stripes, it's in awesome condition.
