  • LT1 brakes >> 3rd Gen

I did a search on this site and TGO and did not come up with much. The question is "Will the front brakes off of my 3.8L Firebird fit my '86 TA? " I read that LT1 brakes are a different design and would not fit a 3rd gen. Why? Does that include V6 and V8 or just V8 brakes? Are the spindles different? If LS1 brakes fit a 3rd gen why couldn't 93-97 brakes be done?

I realize that this is not much of an upgrade but I am changing the brakes on my '97 and I need new Calipers on my '86.

The front suspension is dramatically different between the 3rd gen and the LT1 style. Not to mention, you are doing all the work to swap the parts in just to put in single piston calipers. You'd be better off just buying replacement calipers for the '86, since you would be pouring time and money into a swap, the results of which would be negligible.

There's a reason nobody swaps LT1 brakes onto 3rd gens, those results are just not worth the hassle. Not to mention, your '97 didn't stop worth a crap with those brakes on it, why would you want to put them on a car that's going to eventually be even faster?

I found the information to give you that answer in less than 5 minutes using Search on TGO.

Im doing a 4th gen rear end swap from stock 3rd gen drums to 4th gen rear disks. As for the fronts Im leaving them stock for now. Just a thought, after market kit might be better and bolt on saving yourself some time.

Are you swapping the whole rear end? Just remember, the 4th gen rear end is 2" longer on each side...

they make kits to bolt on LS1 front brakes. They modify the spindle and machine the hubs to allow the ls rotor to adapt. I have em on my car.

This is the best way to go, IMO, unless you want to spend big bucks and hit up some SSBCs, Wilwoods, Baers or Brembos...

From what I remember reading on TGO, it's 2" longer on each side.

Great answers everyone. That was pretty much what I had thought but I was looking for confirmation. I will just buy some reman calipers and call it a day and trash the V6 Calipers. Hopefully I could reuse the rotors some how since the are brand new Drilled and slotted.

                    Thank you guys.

you know it, just not sure if I should go with 1.5 or 2" spacers up front.

I'm guessing the LT1 brakes are a pita to use because of the ear on the spindle they mount to correct?
