Step 1, Remove 305, Step 2 replace it with anything else!

No seriously, make it breathe, headers, remove the cats, take all that SMOG and emission shit off there, get some L98 Heads (can be had cheap) Open air element, blah blah blah but in the end its not worth it on a 305 TBI. 305 arent good for anything and this is coming from a guy who is going to do a 305 build!

Replace the rear end, get yourself a 4th gen rear with some bigger gears!

L98 heads? were could i find those. and im only building some power on the 305 just until i can find a bbc for my truck. i cant stand driving stock power cars.
my freind has a 92 and he built a 305 up and he said should be pushing around 450hp. my other freind built up a 305 to put in his 89 s10 and he said he should be pushing around 350hp. but i understand if you spend the same on a 305 and a 350 the 350 will make more power. would a carb setup be a good idea?

um sorry but your friend is about a 450hp 305 car! Get yourself a set of heads from a 305 TPI car or 350 car, have some minor work done to them and bingo. Your friends with these higher hp 305 cars are full of crap to say the least, unless they can provide some documentation I would not believe them at all. You know these cars barely make 150hp stock right?

Get a performer intake and a decent carb, ditch the TBI and PCM, will help you with tuning purposes as well. Burning chips for these cars are a PITA and not many people do it and the ones who do never seem to do it right. CARB FTW if staying old school SBC.

EDIT: Not to rain on your parade but you will hear it over and over again, save your $$ buy a better block. Drop in a running 350 for now and call it a day. If your going to build a 305 you need to get a lot of information and search for good deals on parts, either way its not worth it. Again all of this is coming from a guy who has a bare 305 block in his garage going to be "built" one day. I would be shooting for 300-350 hp with that block, might even have to spray to get it there. Not cheap either.

ok ill have to get a list of what they did. iv only known the kid that says his 305 makes 450hp for about 1month. i didnt beleave him either but he insisted that it made that much. as for the id with the 305 that mad 350hp his is correct. he built it at his colledge and got it dynoed. he did LOTS of work to his. almost everything was redone. bore stroke crank heads ect. also i heard that 305s make 180hp and 220tq stock.

350hp is believable if done right and yes that would be the whole motor being redone to get it there...

170hp 255tq BRAND new, not worn out older 305's and yours being a auto with a open diff with 2.73 gears I would start there, and with exhaust. The rest you will need a tune, or switch to carb. My car is already running too rich and I havent changed too much on mine.

man 305 hp numbers suck. the tq tho is pretty high. i wanted to keep the stock rear 2:73 gear for highway racing. we have alot of highway racers around here.

i had an old 350 tbi 1989 gmc truck and i built up the top end of the motor. i had eded up blowing a rod but the top end was salvaged. it had a comp cam extreme energy cam in it. would that cam work in my 305? and would it add any power or torque?

IMHO, any money that you drop into that 305 is money lost on other projects.

And I'm with Darren on this one...highly, HIGHLY unlikely he has 450 hp...with a supercharger, maybe...with a lot of work.

Heads, exhaust, fuel delivery are all weak points...

Nothing measurable...the 305 heads are too restrictive...now if you still have the heads from the 350, you might (might) have something to work with...

agreed. You will never be happy with the 305. It is cursed by a small bore, and as a result its never going to make good power for the money. You might be able to get 450hp out of one, but youll spend twice as much doing that as you would if you just built a 450 hp 350. IMO just give it hell till she puffs and keep putting your pennies in the bank in the meanwhile.... cause they dont puff easy

Just drop a TBI motor out of a truck into it for about $300 and you will be thrilled. And the only way 2.73 gears help in a highway race is if your racing to 160 mph, which I doubt a 305 tbi could EVER hit. If you want cheap street fun. Put a 3000 stall and 4.10 gear in it and it will FEEL fast as HELL. Theres my .02. Eric L

my buddy got his 89 camaro rs to 150mph. i have the video of it. i was riding in a 1992 acura integra and we raced him we were climbing at 130 and he was pulling hard. once we got to 140 he was about maybe 10 lengths ahead. im guessing he hit 150.

Changing a rear gear wont affect the MPG's that much, heck go to a 3.23 or 3.42 at the least! I hate my 3.08!
