WHy put an MSD box on if you are stock and trying to keep it original? Your factory GM ignition is more than up to the task for that motor.

I've used multiple spark discharge on my other cars and gotten better mileage and a cleaner burn. Since I drive this car daily, I wanted to see if it made a difference. I think it will burn a bit cleaner and it is a bolt on that can be taken off easily. It certainly can hurt.

I was hoping to find someone else with a 3rd gen tpi car that had done this to get ideas for mounting locations. I am stil leaning towards mounting it inside the car out of sight.

I bought this car because I missed driving the 69 during the late fall through early spring. Michigan has such a short cruising season - so since I didn't like any of the new cars at the time, and this was less $$ than a new car, I bought it and it has been my DD ever since. The car is still original - it will only take me 5 minutes to remove it for a show.... that is why I will only do bolt ons. And if you keep a car clean and free of salt, Michigan winter doesn't have an effect on a car. Ask anyone who has seen the car if it looks like it has been driven in the winter for the past 14 years... they will say no and also say it doesn't look like it is driven at all. All it takes is dedication. Being a little nuts doesn't hurt either!

I did find a fairly easy spot to mount the MSD box - and it does drive much smoother. Like MSD says "the benefits are quicker ET’s, easier starting, reduced plug fouling, more power and even increased fuel economy can be expected with the 6A’s high energy multiple sparks" It does start easier - and is more responsive at higher RPM and doesn't seem to drop off like it did before. I will keep everyone posted on fuel economy and plug fouling.

And yes... I'll get a picture as soon as I am able.

The MSD igintions have always made all of my cars run smoother, start quicker and get better economy - I don't see why the IROC will be any different.

How much did that setup run you?

If it helps in the higher RPM band, I might look into it. TPI needs help up there.

the problem doesn;t lie in the ignition on your higher rpms kyle... that has to do with the tpi set up which is more of a lower rpm motor set up

I know that. I'm thinking of porting the plenum and intake, and maybe getting some bigger runners to help a little.

But if he says it feels a little more powerful in higher RPM ranges, I'm in.

With the msd 6A I get smoother detonation in the higher rpm... It has always seemed to feel sluggish after about 3500... with the MSD installed it feels to puller smoother and is quicker to get into the top end. I know TPI are anemic in the top end anyway, but MSD has seemed to help.

I bought the 6A off of craigslist for $55.00 out of Seattle...

(here is a tip for any that want to search all cities for an item without having to go to each individual craigslist.... type the name of what you want along with craigslist in a search engine... you'll find what you are looking for very easy!!)

I also ended up ordering the adapter harness for $25.00 so I wouldn't have to cut and factory wiring.

Wow. I might think about doing that soon.

It utilizes the factory HEI distributor, right? Does it just replace the in-cap coil or something?

it doesn't replace anything - it gets added to the factory ignition system. it patches in between the factory coil and the distributor wiring....

Oh, so I would need to buy the harness, correct?

I think I'm gonna look into this.

I mean, every little bit counts!
